Killing coon

Until I was in my forties I probably killed coons every night I hunted, regardless of what time of the year it was. As I got older I finally decided it was a lot better to leave them to run again, I know for a fact it has absolutely nothing to do with the way your dog trees, that's in him when he's born. You can hunt him and teach him a lot of things but you won't make a coon dog out of him if it isn't there to start with.

Agreed! Don't wanna take a chance of taking out 4 or 5 coons at once!

if a dog needs coon shot out to it year round to keep looking good your shooting the wrong animal! if people would wake up they would notice the real good hounds just need to be kept in shape and praised when they do a nice job!

This is an awful time of year to shoot them but regardless a dog over 2 rarely needs a coon and like someone else said if your dog needs a bunch of coons then you are shooting the wrong animal.

my female actually does a better job if i dont shoot a bunch of coons to her. sure i killed a few this winter to her. but we dont have a huge population of them and i like to see eyeballs lookin at me when i get there. Now i will admit we were hard on them when we were younger, but we relize now they are much funner to tree several times.

Back in the early 90s when hides were bringin good money we would travel farther and shoot coon...now its rare to shoot em unless were pup training and season is in....our 2 pups were workin on now could care less about a dead coon...a couple chews and they look at you like they are ready to go...i swear mine trees better when i dont shoot him any...or he is just getting better lol...kill season ended in mid feb...he was shot down 10 or so...now hes been under double that many and coming on alot better...but hes also a month older and been in the woods that much longer....so could be why he is better...

Good dog dont need coon shot to it imo...
