how could the dog tree if he didnt track it jmo

Posted by Mike Reynolds on 03-02-2012 09:16 PM:

Mine better be doing both by the time its a year old or I will not own it. I do not expect a year old pup to be a coondog but it should already be able to trail and tree a coon. That is if its been given a fair chance.

Tyson, great question. I agree with You, and your Dad. It's far more impressive to me to hear a pup or any dog on the wood oppossed to running a track. After a hunt nobody has ever asked me how many coon did my dog run. They always ask how many coon did my dog Tree! If I liked to listen to them run I would own Running Walkers. But I think mine are called Treeing Walkers.

I have been a coon hunter for 36 years now, but i still remember those hounds of years ago, they would all run a track but most of them you had to beg them to tree! I prefer a young dog to tree first, if you dont have a tree dog, you do not have anything. I agree with Bobby R. that todays hounds start much easier and if hunted should be tracking and treeing by a yr. old. Gene Parrow

WELL I SEE YOU ARE FROM TENNESEE , BUT IN OHIO A DOG CAN TREE COON A WITHOUT RUNNING A TRACK, BUT THERE ARE PROBABLY A LOT MORE COON HERE THAN IN TENNESEE,
IN OHIO A DOG THAT HAS THE SKILL CAN THROW HIS HEAD UP AND TREE COON SOME MAY CALL THAT TREEING LAYUPS, I SAW 2 WALKERS THEY WERE LITTERMATES TRAINED BY THE SAME GUY, WHEN CUT THEY WENT TO TREE A COON NOT STRIKE A TRACK BOTH OF THOSE DOGS WOULD TREE LOTS OF COON WITHOUT RUNNING TRACK, & WON THERE SHARE IN PKC

I AGREE WITH TOM MOST ANY DOG CAN RUN A TRACK SOME BETTER THAN OTHERS BUT WITHOUT A TREE WE HAVE NOTHING JMO

Tree & Track

im sorry but from what iv seen there arent near as many good track dogs as there are tree dogs, it takes a lot smarter dog to Trail than it does to tree, by any standard, and yawl can keep your hot nosed tree dogs , thats whats wrong with the hounds now .... lazy !!

Grubbers arent track dogs , their some ones silly idea of a cold nosed hound, you dont have to stand on your head to trail a cold track, unless your not smart enough to find the hot end of it, plain and simple if i want to hear a dog tree thats easy i can go most any night and and hear some ones hound barkin @ the moon, the sport of coon hunting has always been strike trail and then tree ..........

Thats right...and this is EXACTLY why hounds arent what they used to be....breeding to much tree and not enough track...ill be honest I get EMBARRASSED bad when one of my dogs comes up slick!

Quick treedogs aren't always slick tree dogs, thats someones silly idea of a quick treedog! You dont have to always run a feed track to tree a coon.. If its so easy for you to find a dog that will tree and stay under any circumstances and not have to always run a track for a half hour before it trees please let me know where they are at because mostly what I see and draw in the hunts are loose lipped idiots that will cover the " hot nosed pop up dog" as soon as he trees the coon!

quick tree dogs

i owned one of the best layup hounds a man would ever want to follow and she has treed more coons on the first bark than most hounds have ever seen, she took the track as it come though, and would never boor you on an old feed track, your hound had to be very qood to tree ahead of old Nancy, feed track or Hot Track ........

In the last 30 years i probably would have changed my mind a few times. Back in the 80s it wasnt uncommon to still be haulin a 2yr old and still hoping that the tree would come and i sure wasted alot of time on dogs back then that could run a track but never would make a tee dog. Back then a pup that would look up at a young age was a rare thing. Times have sure changed, now we have pups that seem to be born looking for a tree and i have come to realize that whats hard to have is a balance of the two. Either one by itself is useless.

Them tree dogs are a much wanted quantity on the classifieds $2500-to $5000 won't hunt alone , 60% accurate. But will really tree right or wrong. If you don't believe me go try one. I didn't vote.

I guess it would depend on whether the trees have coons in them or not.

I'd put up with a dog that trees coons longer than a dog who just wants to run track.

A friend had a pup out of Beaver Lake Lightning ( about 1977 ) that started treeing at 5 months old with the old dog.
The old dog got killed when the pup was 6 months old , so Doyle had to start hunting him by himself. That dog treed more coon that fall , before he was a year old , than most 3 year olds.
Stone silent by himself , but would open when hunted with open dogs. He was that way till the day he died.
I owned a female littermate that started running track at 5 months , treeing at 6 months , and had her first " split with the meat " at 7 months and never looked back. Open track dog all her life.
One pup out of 11 never did tree.
Bud was the only one who was silent.

Maybe they have improved on the first line I ever had that started treeing before he was mighty proficient at running. Oh yes , it is impressive to see a little puppy treeing (it was to me anyway and I farted around with that kind for about 6-8 years before I wised up). I have had two that treed the first night out at four months that had never seen or smelled a coon. Most of that line would treee by 9 months whether they knew anything or not.

Treeing, with the kind of dogs that I hunt, comes with a little age and maturity. They might put in when thier legs will tote them , then be opening by 5 months, be out running some by 9months and not tree a lick till a year and a half old. From 1965 to present I have had four dogs that never got the treeing idea but they never got any of the right idea and 2 were from the susposed early ones and two were from the later treeing lines.

Well I have had others that were worthless as well but that was more about handling or trash running or facebarking issues.
