your inbox is full. I sent you a message.
thanks for your comments. I have worked hard in my breeding.
I have been coonhunting since i was 8 years old and i am 56 years old. I started breeding hounds when I was 13. won 7th place in my first competition hunt at 13 with a dog that was 13. haha In a storm. I really got into the competition showing and hunting when I was about 21 and I got beat a lot. I am very competitive and I sure didnt like getting beat. after buying sorry dog after sorry dog and pups that I drug all over the woods trying to train them to run and tree and ended up with nothing, I made up my mind if I was going to have a top hound I was going to have to breed for it.
I learned early on its the female that should be your foundation stock and where you can build a bloodline that can suit you.
I have high expectations. I want a hound that is capable of winning the world hunt and then turn around and win the world show. thats just me and thats what I want for me.
I started with the best looking, loudest mouth most intelligent gamiest female I could find. she belonged to a friend of mine and I nagged him for over a year before he sold her to me. I then bred her to the best looking, toughest, loudest mouthed hardest going male dog I ever hunted with. from that cross came7 pups that ran and treed with the old dogs the first time they were ever hunted. all of them. Not just one or two. I kept a female from that cross and kept keeping a female and breeding to only a stud that had all the traits that I demand. I didn't care if he had a title or not. Some where dual grand ch. studs and others had no title at all and were just pure hide hanging coondogs that were loud and smart.
Just like there are good horsemen, there are good dog men. I happened to be blessed to recognize a smart dog when I am around them. If you have an intelligent hound, I have found that training them is as easy as showing them a couple of turned loose coons and thats about it.
The 9th and 10th generation females that I have here are smart as cur dogs. they both started with 2 caged coons turned loose in front of them. they have been running and treeing their own coons ever since. Neither will pull even if you shoot a coon out 20 yards from them. The both are world show quality females.
As you can see it took years to get here. but I have the pleasure of not every being without a dog to catch a coon with and can tear up the bench shows as well.
Nothing comes easy and there are no short cuts. most of us dont have the money to buy a world beater. buying pups off of all grands to all grands or world ch. to world ch. for 800 to 1,000 dollars is never ever a guarentee.
Start with a pup from a real breeder who has a proven track record and that will be a good place to start.
lots of men mentioned on here are as much if not more able to be declared a good breeder. don Little who used to write for the magazines is one of the premeire dog men I have ever read about. I was doing what he was writing about a long time before he was writing about it, but I had to do it by trial and error.
I could have saved myself a lot of time had I read his material before I did a lot of things.
family breeding or line breeding is always a good place to start as well.
