I feel anyone that breeds his dog to a equally talented female, that wants to improve the line they believe in, I think is a real coon hunter.

The term breeder reminds me of a guy that has since gave up hunting. He would breed his hound to a jackass if they though the offspring would tree a coon. he would have 4 or 5 litters of pups all the time.... There was a pile of dogs left his house over the years.

I believe their is a definite difference in a hunter and a breeder ... JMO

I would say there are very few that know enough about genetics to know witch jar of black and white beans will have the most white beans in it when you mix them all together. The ones that do in my eyes would be the best.
Then you have the ones that breed the best to the best and hope for the best and if they take into concideration treits of both sire and dam and try to match them up so the pup will HOPEFULLY come out better than the parents. I would say is second best.
Then you have the ones that breed paper to paper and I would put them at third.
Then you have the ones that breed any bitch to a well known stud and I would put them at the bottom. $$$$$$ X pr

The one exception is the guy that fits in the number one catagory up at the top but goes one step further and keeps the best (or knows enough people to place them well) and shoots the rest.

Before the bleeding hearts say anything. Best to best and shoot the rest is what happens in NATURE. Only the ones with the right treits survive.

Nope, don't know many well enough to say. That is just my opinion of the differant types of breeders.

gonna make some folks mad im sure but so be it.... anyone who breeds coondogs is a breeder... i have set and watched the best bred to the best and produce nothing more times than nothing bred to the best an produce something.... anyway you want to look at it its a shot in the dark and even when you have a proven cross the next one might all be culls... if anyone figures out how to always make good crosses he will get filthy rich fast

To me it means someone that is working with multiple generations of a strain focusing on producing balanced hounds with ability, mouth, looks and pedigree.

Curt comes to mind with Trackman, Cold Sweat and Sweat It.

David Griner's cross with Gr Nt Hot Sauce (daughter of Trackman) back on Gr Nt Sweat It (son of Cold Sweat) is an example of guys working together for the good of the breed.

Successful Breeder

Mr. Meyer, It might be easier to define if it was "Successful Breeder" instead of just "Breeder". A successful breeder would have applied the talents of making good crosses over time and would have done so with his own females, he would be hunting the same line today as several years ago, and would have mastered the art of matching strengths and weakness to the point that more good dogs are being produced than weak. And maybe above all would have the courage to plant those in the ground that don't work. If he has'nt realized that all crosses don't work he certainly hasn't done enough to be called "Breeder".

I cant hunt hard enough to train pups anymore but my opinion would be to look for the breder that makes a cross for himself and keeps and hunts dogs from his own crosses. Anyone who makes a cross and sells every pup probably isnt doing it for the right reasons.

IMO....

You have Responsable Breeders....those that breed thier dogs that have done bloodline research, hunting with prospective sires and others out of the line, not relying solely on "papers and Titles"

And the Common "backyard breeder"...those that breed any dog to any top stud at the time just for the $ that the pups out of that sire are bringing at the time

and NO I dont think anyone that has 1 female that they have bred once or mabye even 2 times is considerd a breeder.

Most breeders on here are puppy mills trying to make a buck. And are not interested in bettering the breed at all.

The people who care enough to spend their lives in the sport and when they breed it's for themselves for what they themselves like in a dog. If you like the same thing you can buy the extra ones and if you're lucky and put your time into it you may have something. For me that something has to be what I personally want it to be which may not be what everybody else wants. End of each day I'm the one that has to be satisfied.

A breeder is someone who looks to improve Wat they have and breed for THEMSELVES and do not just breed to cater the public...

You should had said GOOD COON HOUND BREEDER. There are a lot of good respectable breeders.....BUT......... there are far more that do it for the wrong reasons or don't know what they are doing and to proud to ask the succcessful knowledgable people that have spent there lives learning.
I figured out a long time ago you cant be an expert on everything and it is easier to ask and trust than to become one.
I am a barber so I have access to a wealth of information. If I need leagle a laywer will walk in with in a couple weaks, mechanic, electrition, plumber, or any other profesional you could ever need.
If I get to wanting to know about blood lines there right on here and I have never had them turn me down or be anything but helpfull.

Someone that breeds what they hunt and hunts what they breed. I.e. Someone who knows what they are breeding and why they feel that particular cross is worth making and continues to hunt dogs off they're own stock.

When I think of a successful breeder that has been doing it along time one name comes to mind. Lee Logan of Beaver PA.

Some others that come to mind are Larry Wilcox and Russ Downing. Both these guys are hunting dogs that go back to hounds from they're kennels for several generations.

All 3 of them have had dogs in the Final 4 of the UKC World Hunt and they're not breeding based on titles.

I'm with dwils on his one.

I've been breeding the same stock of dog for 10 and 11 generations which go back to 1981. I breed for myself an if someone wanted to buy one I sold them one. there are several men all over the midsouth and the country that are hunting hounds from that 1st cross I made all those years ago. There are grandnight champions, world champions, walker day winners that are all products of that breeding and I am just a back yard breeder. Never ran ads in the magazines on them and just started using the internet the past few years to advertise them.

I never made much money on any litter to speak of, but the fact that there are hunters and old hunters at that that are hunting the same stock that I started with are a compliment to me.

I would add lonnie mears and rick vestal of brownsville tn. who have been long time finley river breeders who are still hunting dogs like I am from their own lines.
thats what I call a breeder.

I have a standard I breed for and to. I will not compromise.
I breed for:

1.a intelligence
1.b balanced ability
2.mouth
3.confirmation looks....lots of chrome. I breed for red head and blanket back no exceptions. No planned breeding I ever made had an open spotted pup in the litter.
4. cat footed

any pup I kept granded on the bench early and any pup I show rarely gets beat at the local level. If they did it was home cooking.
I was prepared and my dog was prepared. a couple of times they lost due to just having a bad day it wasn't because of their confirmation.
any pup I kept has allways ran and treed by 6 months of age. usually by themselves.

I am not bragging, I have worked hard. Very hard to produce hounds like these and LIke I said I don't compromise and I will not breed to a hound that doesn't have all 5 of the traits above.
When you do this it sure ups your odds for success.
