Just received my news letter from Purina and it does say that long ears do help funnel the smell molicules in the nose. Big article about this. Pretty neat!

If a dog is moving slow enough to depend on long ears to stir up scent...you're getting nowhere fast.
I do like a houndy looking dog, but c'mon people. If you're depending on an "ear sweep" to be able to follow a track....
If hes a sho-nuff coondog I don't even care if he has ears!!!!!!!!!!

I gotta agree with John Carroll on this one. They should look and sound like a hound, not a farm dog. Most people wouldn't know what a cold nosed dog was if it bit them in the butt.
I think long ears are pretty but I think our priorities have to be in order. In other words, find me the best all-around coondog you can find that consistently trees coons and is loaded with natural ability. Then show me his ears and that is what a dog's ears should look like. I don't care if there cropped and pointed on top.

i've got one ugly little walker female here with real short ears.... she is cold nosed and unbelievably fast on track.... if having longer ears helps them 'funnel' scent better, i can only imagine what she would be like then!!! lol

How's this for long ears? On a hot running track she's only been beaten to the tree once and that was by her daughter and she was 9 years old.

Ear length has NOTHING to do with how fast a dog is.

Still not sure what effect the ears have on making a dog faster. I have read that the longer ears help funnel the scent making them more efficient. That's why the bloodhounds with their really long ears have all other hounds whipped about scenting. I'm by no means an expert this is just information I have read I work in a library so have access to lots of books. LOL. The other posts have me confused about how the short ears make them better coondogs. I'm willing to listen to any information to learn more about making good dogs. Amy

If this dog had been bred to hunt...and trained...he'd have had no problem with the ears... he likes to WIND critters with his head UP in the air. Our bluedawg is always nose and ears to the ground sniffing out critters(especially honey bees in this season!)....

Ear length serves no useful purpose in hounds. If anything, they are a handicap. Seem to be the first thing a coon latches onto, and they get torn up in briars, sticks, etc. A torn ear bleeds A LOT! If you ask me, a shorter ear is far better for a number of reasons...but people have to have a set of long ears to look at or they aint happy.
