whats everyones thoughts on short eared hounds,I dont really like the way it looks...but it dont effect there hunting ability. they just look kinda funny to me.

yea i hate a little dog with little ears a hound is supposed to have nice big ears and be a good sze dog mostr of them know look like beagles

I thought the longer ears helped funnel the scent in hounds making them more efficient hunters? Amy

I have a female with short ears and she is quick and has a good nose. I hear say the one with short ears will stay put on the wood.

LONGER EARED DOGS SEEM TO HAVE SOME PROBLEMS HOLDING MOISTURE AND HAVING VET BILLS. WE DON'T NEED THAT DO WE? I ALSO LIKE A DOG WITH MEDIUM EAR. THOSE BLOODHOUND STLYE EARS ARE ALMOST GONE I THINK.
A DOG SHOULD HAVE THE EAR DOWN ON THE HEAD FARTHER THEN AT TOP. A SLIGHTER ROLL FORWARD ALWAYS APPEARS GOOD TO ME.

OK guys let me get this straight, a short eared dog is faster for nite hunts, they have hot noses,and coons have less to get a hold of. I forgot to add,they are stay put tree dogs and have less mouth

On the other hand, long eared dogs, are cold nosed b/c they can funnel the scent, and they are slower on track,and they have lots of vet bills.

COONDOG you have an exception to the rules you better keep her...

MAN O MAN what a confusing mess for a new hunter to take in.

Still not sure what effect the ears have on making a dog faster. I have read that the longer ears help funnel the scent making them more efficient. That's why the bloodhounds with their really long ears have all other hounds whipped about scenting. I'm by no means an expert this is just information I have read I work in a library so have access to lots of books. LOL. The other posts have me confused about how the short ears make them better coondogs. I'm willing to listen to any information to learn more about making good dogs. Amy

short ears...........were short to begin with.....the coons have made 'em even shorter.lol............he looks like his daddy, Dual Grand Lampmans Lone Pine Thunder..........they don't look that bad when he's hammering a tree off a cold trail...........and although he'll never win the Autumn Oaks show, he is a grand champion.lol

I have a long eared dog that very few dogs can stay up with, much less out run. She's also only a medium nosed dog.
