Your right the Field Trialers from the 70's ran some slow dogs! You weren't gonna fill any freezers that way.
You had to pack a lunch and a Warm Coat waiting for the rabbit to circle...
I think the Performance Pack format favors the more conservative cleaner running hound!
I would think this would be the trial format for the GUN Dogs!

yes sir, just as soon as I think that perfect hound has come along it reminds me it is just a dog in some way or another. lol... I like the comp hunting for the hanging out in the clubhouse as much as the hunting. I have made a lot of friends with this sport and hope to make more. I hope you all have and keep the kind of hound that pleases you and hopefully get to run with you some day. I guess my answer to the question would be a dog who is field trialed is a field trial dog for that day. A dog who is gun hunted is a gun dog for that day. I do both with most of my dogs but I kill a few to them hopeing to give them more incentive to give it all they have day after day.

I don't think there is an actual definition to what a trial dog is or what a gun dog is. To me it is simply each person's views and/or opinions. Trial dogs you enter in a trial. If the dog is good at trialing then the dog is a "good" trial dog if the dog doesn't do well in trials then it's a not so good trial dog. If the dog itself enjoys field trialing that should be what matters. Same with gun hunting with a dog. If a dog has in it what you are looking for it should also be the main thing that matters. Same with being a rabbit dog. To some it has to be a beagle but to others if it knows how to chase a rabbit and bring it to you its a rabbit dog no matter what the breed may be.

Jimmy Leach, Sounds like you have some good dogs. I got my first beagle 35 years ago , have seen a lot of good Beagles, Have hunted with some field champions, have hunted with a lot of good ones that were not. You must value the opinion of the person who told you, your dogs weren't trial Quality very highly to let it jack you out of shape so Much! How many times have you hunted in 10 below zero weather , with 4" of hard crust on top of 12 inches of snow, where the wind has polished it to a mirror finish , with your dogs. How about 10 below zero and 16 inches of dry powder, How about no snow but a solid inch of ice, How do you think your dogs will do .

My father grew up in the great depresion-- GOOD LORD BLESS HIS SOLE---I lost him at a early age an I was raised by MY MOTHER -an his friends due to respect and sorrow fer the loss---- they also lived threw that down right tuff time ---the stories ive heard were flat scary an no BS because I heard em from to many of angles and alot of em wernt mixed -all had the same lay-out! THEY DIDNT FEED ANY THING THAT DIDNT IN RETURN FILL THERE GUTS!!!!!! MAY THE GOOD LORD BLESS ALL THEM OL-TIMERS B-PORTARO--CHIC FREDERICK--CHUCK LEON---JUS TO NAME A FEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!THEM OL-TIMERS HAD TRUE GRIT! Yes i have some very nice hounds that if you look at there pedigrees they go back to some of best hounds out there ill give you a fews names GRHBCH CH TIPTON`S NG SHAMROCK / GRHBCH SUNDOWN TRIPLE THREAT / GRCH GRHBCH MILAM`S LOKO GO RED so i have some of the best that money can buy . Where we live we don`t get much snow more ice then anything but when we do get snow its a blessing and the dogs do very well i have sold dogs from Mississippi, Pennsylvania to Maine . I have hunted in weather below zero and have done great and to answer your question when you ask how do you think your dogs will do . In the weather you mentioned about and your answer is they would do just fine . I do value the opinion of alot people but when idiots here where i live set out to bad mouth me and my dogs and telling me they are not as you said trial quality dogs he wouldn`t know what a gundog is if i would pick one up and busted him in the face with it all i was askig what the diffrent was between field trial dogs and gundogs was and it has got to this point . Trial Dog Gun Dog? Every dog in my kennel is a rabbit hunting beagle. Which in turn makes it a good hunting beagle in trials. The trials just show faults that we tend to over look while hunting, If judged correctly. I seen some trial dogs that I know i couldn't gun with unless the whole pack ran to the front so fast. I like my pack tight and close. Maybe thats the difference. One thats so competitive that you can't keep a pack together. Maybe thats a trial dog. A dog thats so competetive it disregards the pack work.

Yes we have few here in Arkansas i`m sure they are all over i think alot of it has to do with the fact they are jealous that you are not buying from them and that you got better dogs then they do instead they want to sit around thinking about petty little things to do and say to others . HARRY WARNICK i think takeing gundogs/rabbit dogs to trails is a plus when you see the faults in your gundogs/rabbit dogs then when you get em home you can work on them faults you seen at the trails . There is a actual definiton of a trial dog or gundog is . It just alot of guys have diffrent of opinion on what they are if you would go back and read CSG`S reply to my post on the 1st and 2nd page He made a good point . He talk about FS that means field stock thats where all these differnt breds of beagles started from . I guess if you want to know the true definition is you would have to find some of them OL TIMERS CSG talk about and sit and talk to them about this . Thanks Jimmy Leach

The Truth is Nowadays if your Beagle can run a rabbit and is under 15 inches there is a Trial format to match it, so you could call them all trial dogs.
To me a smaller percentage are considered a Gun Dog that can flat out fill the game bag if needed, and Jimmy I would take it as a compliment.

FS is what UKC called it when you single registered a dog in the late 80's and early 90's. Defintley not where all these different breeds of beagles started from.

Mooredog you are probably correct in saying that there is a format for about any style of beagles, even the.

Yes you are right there are diffrent formats to match the kind of beagles you run . I have ran all the fromats AKC spo ARHA/NKC and UKC and place in all formats . I don`t go to field trails every weekend maybe once a month if that . I go to the trails to see how my dogs match up against other dogs and if i see something my dogs done wrong that will let me know when i get back home i can take that same dog out and work on the faults that we seen in the field trials we been to that day . And i`m not saying i got the best dogs in Arkansas but i do know my dogs and where they came from and that they can run all weather conditions because thats the way i have ran my dogs and they are train and that i do run all year round and thats why they have got to be the way they are now i guess i myself is calling my dogs gundogs because i hunt over mind more then i do the field trails also i guess my post is or has rub some guys wrong and that i wasn`t trying to do that i was just only asking a question is all Thanks Jimmy Leach

You know. This is all too funny.. I have a few dogs that are young in the making that are very tight mouthed. The Hare hounds I like real well. I have been woriking on breeding up a real good hare hound with lots of nose & brains to go with it. Im trying to cross Haunted hill with Dingus . I don't know how it will all turn out in the long run, hopefully good. I love the hunt of a hare hound ,but favor a cottontail dogs traits. I have field trialed a little in the past, But learned that my dogs have a little too much nose for the UKC format. I do like bolth types of hounds. I guess im trying to get them bolth wrapped up in one package. No hard feelings on the earlier comment, because I do own bolth. It's all in good fun,& enjoyment..

There was nothing you said in your earlier comment that would make me have bad feelings toward you i guess others do but you know i talk to someone last night about this whole post deal he said i didn`t do or say nothing wrong on here and he didn`t care what anybody said about his dogs he has always been right to the point i have always went to him about things like this and he been right .
