-- what is coonhuntin??to you (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=395709)
I like taking a pup all the way through to the finished product, putting the extra touches on them. i'm always looking for one that has all the tools to make it to a final four of a big hunt.
When i free cast a dog that I have worked and it does right when everything else does wrong thats where i get my satisfaction from, if they don't have the tools to accomplish what I want then i sell them and start over.

hunting
to me its about starting that young dog then hunting him and having my 8 yr old son tell a seasoned coon hunter he called the wrong dog because he has grown into a coon hunter right along with ol voodoo and he can call him as good as me.

hunting is......
Its an addiction. Coonhunters are a dying breed. Its about family tradition, following in the footsteps of your mentors, good friends, and the camaraderie. I enjoy learning from fellow coonhunters, and hearing the stories that are told. Its in my blood..... Either you're a COONHUNTER or you're NOT.
The dogs....
I love seeing a dog mature, learn from its mistakes, and turn into a coondawg. Its great to learn as much from your dog as you teach it. Also, to be able to know what your dog is doing, when he is doing it, actually before he does what he's doing, is great. To know a dog inside and out, better than most anything else in your life. My dogs are my best friends, I spend more time training and hunting them, than doing anything else in my life.
There are so many things that make coonhunting "coonhunting" to me. Oh yeah.... I almost forgot.... The great "let's make one more last drop"

It can be a stressful way to relax........It can be peaceful or it can make you talk to yourself, and want to quit right after you shoot your dogs. You can make a lot of friends until your hounds start doing better than theirs, or someone lies to you about a dog, or accuses you of lying about a dog. You could make a little money if it wasn't for high priced dog feed, vet bills, having a dog to die or get stolen once in a while, tracking equipment, shocking equipment, medication (for you and the dogs), dog boxes, four wheel drive trucks, lights, collars, kennels, clothes, boots, guns, and last but not least...dogs. It can be relaxing until the dogs start barking at night, waking up the neighbors, and you have to go out at 3:00 am to make them shut up: Or you have to get up early the next morning and you can't get the dogs to come in. It's almost like they don't care that you have a hard day ahead of you, and you need a little sleep.
Overall, it is an ADDICTION, and I'm not sure there is a cure. You either love it, or hate it. Not too many "Middle of the Road" coonhunters. You don't have to be crazy to do it.......but it helps.

what coon hunting is to me
Coon hunting is lots of things to me, right now its a pleasure thing, that my guy and I do, but soon I hope to be competing on bench, and possibley in hunts, although i do get a little nervous about competive hunting! But, I am game.
It is also a way to spend time out doors at night and enjoy the sweet sound of a dog on tree!
And it is a great hobby to pass on to the kiddos! so much better than video games!
