I agree! LOL

I've helped put a leash on a possum. And walked it along side of possum catching pro. Everytime the dog even looks excited, whip em. Just continue to walk dog and possum next to each other until dog ignores possum. Being made to be by it and not pay attention to it, is the trick. They shouldn't avoid it or be scared. They should just get used to it and not feel anything towards it. No excitement, no fear. Like the possum is another dog. LOL

This should be done in the YARD....with a possum in a trap, or cut loose.

The goal here is possum avoidance. If you put the dog in a fenced in area where they cant get out, put the possum in a cage in the middle of the area...

Let the dog get up close and personal with the possum, so it knows what's in the cage. Make sure you have a training collar on the dog....

When the dog gets excited about the possum, no need to flatten the dog on high with the collar...use only enough stimulation to get the dogs attention. If you can watch from inside the house or inside your truck, so much the better. now as soon as the dog shows interest in the possum again...tingle them again... use increased stimulation if necessary....repeat this until the dog AVOIDS THE POSSUM.

You might have to do this several different times on different days. But the goal is that you put the dog in the yard with the possum, and the dog avoids the possum at all costs.......

Then and only then are you on the path to breaking the dog off possum.

It's called avoidance training. If used correctly, you can correct all a dogs problems humanely,

Kind of weird way. Before my walker became a coon dog he liked slick tails. i would never shoot them out just scold him. Finally one night i shot one out picked it up by the tail and gave him a whooping with it. No problems since.

I got me a rolling cage about 4 years ago. Put a coon in it and let the dogs go fanatic. Last week I was cleaning out the horse shed and threw the rolling pen in the yard and all the dogs in the kennel went bonkers. I said to myself, "I can't believe ya'll are that stupid". So I turned a couple dogs out and they attacked that empty cage till they were frothing at the mouth. I don't think that cage thing is gonna work- sounds good on paper, but I don't think it will work.

I found if they tree a possum ignore it and cuss 'em alittle bit. If they catch one on the ground, cut it's tail off and whip their snout with it. Really that was a long time ago. I train young dogs with old dogs. They might not grow up to be the most independant fools but I haven't treed a possum in ten years or more.
