Possum Breaking Tips????

Alright fellas lets hear em. The good, the bad, the ugly. If its too rough and you dont want to post it on here just message it to me. Any advice or methods will be greatly appreciated. I have a real nice 2 yr old gyp. One big problem.....She loves possums. She will tree a billion coons and a hundred thousand cheese heads.

Thanks in advance

set one in a live trap in your yard everytime she gets close to it give her a lesson with tri tronics watch from a distance so she don t know your the reason she got jolted she'll think the possom shocked her i would never shoot one out and try to give her a lesson after all they should think good things happen when the gun cracks

Carry a bottle of ammonia when you go hunting. When she trees a possum tie her back and knock it down. When it hits the ground pour the ammonia on it and let her go. After she chews on it she will be done for the night. Take her home and hunt her the next day. If she does it again, she is a possum dog lol. I have found this to work well. Good luck and let us know how it goes. It will not hurt her, but she will have running eyes, nose, and will sneeze a lot. Wait til she gets home to give her a drink.

For every hunter, there will be a different way of breaking dogs of whatever habit you dislike. I have been training search and rescue dogs, police k9's and hunting dogs for 20+ years now and each trainer I have ever met has had a different way of dealing with things.

But for god's sake, PLEASE use some common sense when dealing with your hounds. Ammonia????? Ammonia is caustic and hazardous when ingested or comes in contact with soft tissue such as eyes, nose, mouth, etc.. It WILL cause chemical burns.

In the dog training business we always have an old joke about house breaking a puppy. When it pee's on the floor, roll up a old newspaper and whack yourself on the head for not paying enough attention to your dog. If this saying were true here, would you pour ammonia in your own mouth and eyes?

Properly using a Electronic collar could be PLENTY to break a dog off treeing or chasing unwanted game. If your dog has been properly trained and collar conditioned, call him off the tree and redirect him to another part of the woods while scolding him, not beating him. If he does not come, give him a jolt with a higher intensity level and call again, you will likely find out that your dog is pretty smart by nature and learn to associate the scent of a possum with being called off the tree and not rewarded with fur, pat on the back, etc.

People that use hazardous chemicals or harsh methods (like beating the dog with the possom) only give more fuel to the fire for the PLENTY of leftist out there that want dog and hound hunting banned.

I've never seen a dog that couldn't be broke by one of these two methods. Shoot it out and shock them everytime they grab it. If that dont work the next time get a good switch and whip them and don't shoot the possum out, just lead them away after you whip them.

I've only seen one that wasn't broke after the shocker but she was broke after the first good switching

Some people must have harder headed dogs than me. Mine would learn the lesson long before they piss themselves.

I appreciate all the replys fellas but I don't like shooting them out. I have always been told that just makes the problem worse( getting the taste in their mouth). Beating... doesn't work, now she will tree em and stay for about 2 minutes and leave and thats if she doesnt catch them on the ground. She will hardly ever let you get to her before she shags out.

I don't really like getting one out after they tree it. I have had best success with catching a big one and tossing it in the dog box with them on the way hunting. Give them plenty of reason to be scared of the possum with the use of a tri-tronics. Just to make sure they remember that possums are bad continue treatment while hunting that night. Keep a live fresh possum in the box and continue treatment until they tree no more possums. Hunt them with a possum treeing idiot to make sure the process is working. Putting them back in the dog box may be difficult after a couple treatments.

I'm glad I got on here and learned to train my dog!!! Shoot the possum and then beat the pi$$ out of the dog or shoot the possum out and shock the dog.

By using those two methods I don't have to be smarter than the dog. Good thinking guys.

Works for me too. live trap them, kill them, take it to your dog. Throw it to the dog, if it grabs the critter whoop it with the critter. Took about 3 and my female hasn't messed with one sence.

I've also been told to cut the belly open on the critter and hold it over the dogs head until it passes out. Don't know never had to take it that far, the whoopin they recieve usually fixes them.

I have seen hounds get beat and doesn't seem to stop the possum treeing on all of them. It does seem to make them leave before you get to the possum tree.

Rolling them down a big hill in a barrel, don't forget the big rocks to break them up a little and a couple slick tails.

Hang'em in a tree where you can really work em over.

If I have to treat a hound like any of the above to get a broke dog I'll just get rid of the dog.

Amen, they don't get that bad on possom in one repitition. If you don't let it get started you don't have to fix it. One thing for sure though. The longer you wait and the more you let it mess with them the more repititions it is going to take to break it.
That is why mine get into trouble for treeing or messing with any thing but coon from day one. Mine trees a house cat or a squirrel or any thing but a coon it is in trouble but I can handle it with a gruff BAD GAME LEAVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! and never have to beat them to break them latter.
Keep them clean and you don't have to clean them up while you are trying to train them.

Once the dog trees the possum, the damage is already done, and you can't undo it by shocking them, or "whipping them till they pee".....

This should be done in the YARD....with a possum in a trap, or cut loose.

The goal here is possum avoidance. If you put the dog in a fenced in area where they cant get out, put the possum in a cage in the middle of the area...

Let the dog get up close and personal with the possum, so it knows what's in the cage. Make sure you have a training collar on the dog....

When the dog gets excited about the possum, no need to flatten the dog on high with the collar...use only enough stimulation to get the dogs attention. If you can watch from inside the house or inside your truck, so much the better. now as soon as the dog shows interest in the possum again...tingle them again... use increased stimulation if necessary....repeat this until the dog AVOIDS THE POSSUM.

You might have to do this several different times on different days. But the goal is that you put the dog in the yard with the possum, and the dog avoids the possum at all costs.......

Then and only then are you on the path to breaking the dog off possum.

Catch you a possum and put him in the pen with her,put a good bark breaker with a fresh battery and let her have at it.That is how I break mine off of dillers and possums.worked real well on a diehard possum dog, took about 2 days.

Yep the more repititions the better and you won't get many burning them up.

I was all set to pump my advise into this knowledge tank but I first read through what had already been suggested. Double read what Oak Ridge had to say and you will also know what my response would have been. I have used that same method for years. Very good results. I actually use my horse training round pin. Good luck!!!!!!!!

It would be nicew to have two collors. One for the dog and one for the possom. Have them riged were when they collars got with in 10 ft. of each other the collar the dog has on would shock the dog.
( : Then all you would need is that round pen and to paint the dog with possom treat of some kind. ( :
OH and a camera.

You have to stop the dog from running off game before you can stop them from treeing off game . Catch a possum in a live trap, turn it loose let your dog trail it shock him off the track then go coon hunting. DONT shock the dog around the tree ever! Your dog may need this a few times although once may do it, good luck!
