if a judge needs a light on all dogs to properly judge that cast then he shouldnt be judging anyway!!!!

i understand that. however, as a judge... how do you know whose dog is who's besides your own if you've never been to the woods with the other dogs? think of how many times you may have been on a cast and on the 1st dump someone called someone else's dog? you can't make a judgement based on 1 guys word vs. another's if none of you have hunted together...

still no hard evidence of why not to have them? the positives of the situation far outweigh the negatives to me.

if anything, i would tend to think the lights may help one become a 'better' judge.

I'm glad you brought this up. I thought about this before I made the poll...

Clubs could buy or have lights donated and then rent them out before the hunt for some fee. at the end of the hunt, all rented lights are collected by the judge and returned to the club.

If for some reason 2 dogs did have the same color light, you can just flip the battery and 1 will blink and the other will be solid.

I'm not trying to say the dogs should be solely judge by the lights and nothing else. I am saying one could do an even better job at judging with the aid of a light...

If anything the light helps save the dogs and you hate to hear of a dog killed at this event or that...

remind you all this is just a thought of how to make things 'better'.

I seldom hunt competition so 99.9% I have the lights on. I think most hunt the hunts to win if they can and have some fun doing it. Don't know if bettering the breed has much to do with it. I started the lights because of worry over getting in the road but now I also just like seeing the dog even if it's just when I'm trying to catch some knucklehead. Dogs being dogs they aren't always where you think they should be and sometimes for good reason. I've always been told to never use one in a hunt because everytime somebody sees your dog they think he should be scratched for something.
Bottom line I'm not much for MANDATORY anything if it can be avoided.

how would a light help determine which dog struck?

Hypothetical situation:

Dog A - Red Light
Dog B - Green Light
Dog C - Blue Light
Dog D - White Light

Dogs are cast and split off the leash. A and B go right handed, C goes straight and D goes left handed.

Dog opens and handler of Dog A strikes his dog off right handed, and handler of Dog C proclaims thats his hound that opened... immediately after handler of Dog A strikes the Red Light is in front of the cast about 150 yards and the Blue Light is seen by the majority of the cast right handed.

Dog A is 100-
Dog C is 100

...do you see where I'm coming from?

Actually Josh, I had the stupidest some years back when I suggested hardhats should be required for coonhound competion hunts in case a tree fell on someone. But maybe that one is now the second stupidest.....

Trees!!!! Forget the trees, Jim. I have been hit twice in the head by a live coon!

How do you get on a cast where they are wearing all different colors? What if 2 dogs are wearing blue ? It should NOT be required in a hunt! Why not make everyone buy a Garmin and use that in a hunt?

Personnally I hate watching a stupid light bounce around in the dark much less 4 of them. Heck they might have even saved a dog or two of mine on the road..... I guess I'm stubborn.

I guess that's what ya call natural selection

We have the lights but I don't think it should be mandatory! We don't wear ours on the dogs in the hunts, sometimes not even while pleasure hunting....

Some of the judges that I've drawn have been pretty dumb, I can't see some of them being able to keep the four lights separate or remember which dog has what on; blue blinking or blue or was it red? I can see it now lol....

How about a poll to ban paid handlers? Only owners can hunt a dog in the night hunts. I like that better!!

Hey Cody, I'm with you, bud. Down here, you couldn't even see the lights to tell which dog is where. You can certainly tell more by HEARING than SEEING. If a dog is working a half mile deep in timber, there ain't alight that anyone makes that you could see. This has to be one of the lamest ideas I ever heard.
