Any ivomectin works for heartworms. Horse, pig, cattle
It does not kill fleas or ticks. not a reliable wormer for anything other than heartworms and mites.

Ain't that the truth, they all want to spay/neuter them.
I use to have a couple Aussies and gave them ivomectin for cattle. I didn't know it may hurt them either till now. Never seemed to bother them. I am sure that there could always be the chance that it could on certain ones.
I even give it to my chihauhau. Pretty much a drop on his tonge.

Its SIMPLE !!!

All you need to do is give 1/10th CC per 10#'s..of Ivomec 1% ( 50# dog = 1/2 CC ) ...orally once a month for heart worm prevention.

Also for regular worming use Valbazan once a month 1cc per 10#'s.( 50# dog = 5cc ).......if they have Tapes, use the Valbazan 3 days in a row.............................. No tapes, no hook, no roundworms, no heartworms......................Good luck...Tim

ivomec for swine is a different dose then 1% ivomec.now off top of my head the swine ivomec is around .25% so you would have to does it different.i dont remember it right off hand.sorry.ok i used valbazen for many years that was my grand fathers choice of wormers.it doesnt kill all tapes like the ones from fleas.also some of our males would hit and miss in breedings and some of the older males that we thought their stud careers were over.we switch from valbazen and found these dogs were hittin again.so we never went back to it.its great for whips.but over the years now i wouldnt go back to it i'll stick to my worming plan its been working for a very very long time now.like i stated before you dont want to use just one wormer every month.it will catch up to you

Ivomec for pigs comes in two different strengths. One comes in 1% injectable solution for swine and the other comes in .27% injectable solution for grower and feeder pigs. It is easier to calculate dog doses using the 1% solution for most lay people because you just use .1cc per 10# of dog.

As far as potency goes, it has a narrow range of activity against the common parasites in dogs and should be thought of as a vital part to a total parasite program. It is very effective against sarcoptic mange and certain early tissue stages of HW larvae as well as HW microfilaria. At higher doses it has good activity against most hookworms and whipworms. It does not kill tapeworms and has marginal activity against the common dog roundworms. If it were highly effective it would be labeled for these parasites and it is not. That is why it is usually combined with a broad spectrum roundworm/hookworm product like pyrantel as found in Heartgard Plus or Iverhart Plus and Iverhart Max.

Ivermectin will also kill adult heartworms and there have been many studies using this product on a monthly basis to create a "slow kill" effect of adult heartworms. It has fallen out of favor now because the slow kill of these adult heartworms takes up to two years and causes severe lung disease in active dogs being treated. This is a very confusing subject and not many veterinarians even know about this. There may be other things involved with the inflammation such as a parasite that lives on the adult heartworm while in the dog, that can be treated with Doxycycline prior to starting the slow kill treatment that may decrease the lung disease when these worms start to die off. I still recommend HW testing prior to starting Ivermectin in areas with known HW problems. The current recommendation for treating dogs with HW is one or two injections of Immiticide.

It is also important to realize that not one wormer is 100% effective against all internal parasites and resistance has been and will continue to be an issue we have to deal with. Rotating broad spectrum wormers monthly will help to decrease the resistance issues as it has in horses. There are already reports of HW resistance problems along the Mississippi Delta area to Ivermectin (Heartgard Plus) and Selemectin (Revolution). I'd recommend using the higher dose of Ivermectin above two to three times monthly in these regions until more information has been obtained.

Valbazen (Albendazole) is not safe to use in dogs and can cause severe bone marrow suppression. It can also cause birth defects in puppies so it should not be used in pregnant females. There are many good wormers with wide safety margins available for dogs so I don't see the reason to resort to this old wormer that was never approved in dogs.

The Aussie and Collie /Ivermectin issue does not affect all dogs of these breeds. It is a hit or miss genetic condition. There is a test available through the University of Washington Veterinary School that detects dogs affected by the MDR-1 gene. You send them samples (not sure what they require) and they will test your dog for the gene. It is also an issue with the clearance of certain anesthetic drugs such as butorphanol (torbugesic). There is a current ongoing study being performed with affected MDR-1 dogs and various drugs. I just know that Ivermectin and Butorphanol were high on the list of drugs creating problems for affected individuals.

The Heartgard Plus dose is so low that it probably won't affect this breed, but higher levels of Ivermectin listed above might cause some clinical signs in individuals affected by the MDR-1 gene.

ahallada your a wealth of knowlege.i hope people relize
the info you share with them can help them for years.
and that they have it easy.i learned from my grand dad
and my dad.and between them thats over 75 years raising
dogs.but it didnt come easy alot of trail and error.my grand dad
is no longer with us but my dad is amazed on how easy it is to
learn secrects if you may,things that took them years to get right.
my advice to people is take this info to the bank because its golden.i am new to this board and i enjoy your post.i am not new to the dog world but i still learn something everyday.and from your post i am sure that wont be hard thank you sir

They require a DNA swab just like regular DNA testing. It was around $50 a dog last I heard. I have a friend with collies. She doesn't dare use HeartGuard. She uses Interceptor.

Should a man just goto the Co op & get some Valbazen & Ivomec & forget it? OR, Get a vet to give you a perscription for Drontal Plus or Iverhart Max and use those? The Co op would be the easiest ...I think...but would it be just as effective? A person might buy the Iverhart Max or Drontal if it was easier to obtain.

Well you are going to get some great activity with just Ivomec 1% at the doses I gave above and if you need more roundworm control then get the Strongid-T and work this in the schedule as well. Strongid-T works especially well in young pups.

If you keep the fleas off your dogs you shouldn't have to worry about tapeworms. If you see tapeworms (rice looking segments) in the feces of your dog then give Praziquantel as mentioned above and step up your flea prevention program by seeing the Bayer Tree and Shrub Spray thread.

Prazequantel Formulation Dosage without moving to a new syringe

I did not wish to move the Equimax to a new syringe - seemed unnecessary to me. So I just made calculations for the packaging.

This is only for the Prazequantel part of Equimax, which is all I wanted it for. You would have to do your own math for the Ivermectin, and beware of the problems with this medication if you have a susceptible dog breed... Don't do any of these things if you are not sure about yourself, and feel comfortable with medicating you own dogs.

It's packaged in a tube for horses with 12 stops (including the full tube amount). Each stop is for 50 Kilograms of horseflesh (It's also maked in lbs but it's not an even amount and really I only am concerned with the 'stop' not the horse dosage or weight), but 33lbs of dog flesh (at 5mg per Kilogram for dogs). I rounded this off.

Heres the math: There are 897.9 milligrams in the whole tube and each 'stop' contains 74.825 milligram (total divided by 12). Then 74.825 mg divided by 5 mg per Kg and multiplied by 2.2/kg/lb = 32.923 pounds - rounded to 33 lbs of dogflesh per stop.

Use this formula: Weight of dog/33 = 'stops'

Number of stops on the Equimax tube (again it's marked in 100 Kilogram marks for horses - and each stop is a 50 Kilogram amount). Give the next stop up. For extremely small dogs you might have to try to give a portion of this amount, but you need not be too precise here as an overdose is not likely in these amounts.

My dog is about 100 lbs so needed three 'stops' or 224.475 mg of Prazequantel.

My dog did not like the paste, but I just rubbed it at the back of her throat and she was OK. Gave some treats to 'wash' it down after.

That�s equal to $0.014 per pound of dog weight .. A 60 pound dog would have a total cost of $0.84 to worm monthly
You could monthly treat (9) 60 pound dogs for a year ..

1- 16 oz. Bottle of Pyrantel Pamoate Suspension = $ 26.75
1- 25 gram Bottle of Praziquantel Powder = $ 32.85
1- 50 Ml Bottle of 1% Injectable Ivermectin = $ 32.85

Directions for the Mixture :

In a Fresh Clean/Sterile Bottle that can Hold around 24 oz. of liquid add the Entire 16 oz. bottle of Pyrantel Pamoate Suspension.
Next open the Praziquantel and Remove 1 level Teaspoon of the Powder from the canister, the Remaining quantity is 23,500 mg. Add
all the powder to the 24 oz bottle of Pyrantel Pamoate Suspension.
Next Draw off around 2.36 cc/ml of Ivermectin and add that to the Bottle of Mixture .. Shake the Bottle for 3-4 min. Plus shake continence before each dog dosage.

Finished Product:

Each Ml of this Mixture contains :
1- 50 mg of Pyrantel Pamoate
2- 50 mg of Praziquantel
3- 0.050 mg of Ivermectin

Dosage:

Each ml/cc will treat 14 pounds of dog weight . So a 60 pound would receive 4.25 ml/cc of the Mixture ..

Formula for Dosage is ( Total Dog weight / "Divided" by 14 )

I think the praziquantel is overkill for most dogs. YOu shouldn't need it if you have a good flea prevention program. I do like the combo of Pyrantel / Ivermectin and I like Ivermectin/Fenbendazole too. It's easy to just give them separate. Safeguard dose is 1cc per 5# dog and Pyrantel Pamoate is 1cc per 10# dog. Ivermectin 1% is .1cc per 10# dog.

Should be all you need for a great deworming program.

For fleas get the largest Bravecto 88-135# and cut it in half for dogs 44-88#. It will last for 3 months for fleas and ticks and cost $10 per month per dog.

What do you think of Synanthic ( http://www.drugs.com/vet/synanthic-...nsion-9-06.html ) for worming? My vet gave me 3 syringes of 3ml each to administer to one of my hounds for hook and whip worm for a 70 lb dog. 1 syringe per day. The container they labeled noted Synanthic 9.06%, would this be the cattle wormer 9.06% solution in the link I posted above? I don't find anyplace where it is labeled for dogs.

I was thinking the same thing!! I've always used Ivomec but occasionally I work with normal puppy worker and always get a few worms in their poop, so I think Ivomec is pretty good, but not full proof on all worms. Now I def have to work separately for tapes after rabbit season is over as the Ivomec has never kept my beagles free of those. Tough part is that there are plenty of country vets around here telling peoe that Ivomec is all that's needed.

I think it's strange they would recommend a dewormer that is not approved for use in dogs when there are so many good ones on the market with proven efficacy and safety margins.

No wormer is 100% all the time so it's good to rotate them. Ivermectin has been a good one , but it has known resistance issues in the Mississippi Delta region for heartworms. It's not effective against tapeworms neither and marginally effective against roundworms at label Dose for dogs.

I know theres many comments already but just putting my opinion in.. We use the safeguard horse wormer. give it to them about 11 in the morning (if you feed at night) for three days in a row and it cleans em out.

I'm not aware of the goat wormer coming in different liquid concentrations. The only one I know of is the same as the cattle wormer that is 10% Fenbendazole. I use it once daily at 1cc per 5# for 3-5 days.

My Experience

Ive always been taught to rotate worm meds & i always use ivomec for heartworm like most everyone else.
Ive used valbazen, Safeguard , strongid, Nemex etc etc with good results BUT once i had a dog get tape worms and i was always told that valbazen would kill tape . Im not sure it really does cause ive never had it to work and had several other friends report the same.
Droncit (Praziquantel) kills tape !
***Now, If you want a broad spectrum wormer to get em all do yourself a favor and just buy the DRONTAL PLUS. give it once and be done with it !! Drontal Plus is expensive but by the time you give the liquid form 3 days in a row of all those other wormers you will not be out a whole lot more money really and in my opinion will get better de-worming results.
