Eugene,
How much is the dog slicking treeing? A young dog will go through some slicking as it learns. I believe the manner that the hunter responds to slicks has a lot to do with how the dog responds.

Aim small miss small
Rubber gardeb hose and a 22 rifle. Beat them and send em on when they are wrong and shoot the coon to them when they are right. I have a young walker that was a tree tree're and I didn't want to ruin him but then it hit home. He aint worth having if he's not accurate so I started this method on public land where I don't mind killing coons. Didn't use a hose but more scolded and switched. It has really made him come around. He still comes up short time to time but has the meat alot now. The only draw back to what I done is he was a 130 bark a min dog and now he is about half that much. Still barks a plenty but I do miss that roar of all them loud chops.
depends totally on the dog, a treee monster is always is going to miss time to time but thats just what you will have to live with. i tend to switch and send on . the more you recast a dog in a woods the more coon smart he gets and sooner or later those slicks trees happen less and less.
if he is bad at it but is mentally tough and can take a real ass whippin and still has the drive to go tree again i would resort to that. SOmetimes all you have to do is hunt them harder.
i wouldnt worry about how many coons you drop. hell they are coondogs and called that for a reason and if you can only shoot a few coons a year to them because they slick bad than what is the point in having the dog.
you should roll coon out to them , and make them absolute afraid to slick. SURE you are going to get a bad track or just come up with no coon every once in a while and thats something you will just have to live with... use common sense, there are dogs that blow in and just jam a slick and totally dont finish the track and there are dogs that work their balls off and just come up with no coon. use your head. i think its pretty simple, just takes time and patience

how about a slick treeing bluedog
Jump outs
Shaking the coon out live might help, i know im a lone rainger on this but, a hound needs to learn to look for the trail before he trees, smart track dogs make better tree dogs. that from 30 years of following good dogs and bad ones. you dont have to shakeum all out but a couple here and there wont hert him, now if hes still slickin after that then, take ur limb too him after youve climbed down the tree........

Slick Treeing
The worst thing you can do for a dog that is an intense hard
tree dog is to give them too many coons. Praise them when they
have the meat and scold them when they don't and send them on.
A real tree do don't need may coon shot on them.

There's several with good advice on slick treeing.
I never encourage a dog on a slick tree regardless of age.
I use verbal commands to get them to go on or a switch if needed.
I send them from the tree and don't walk off until there gone.
I get the coon out if they go ahead and tree it.
I agree, a good track dog will tree fewer slick trees.
A quick tree dog will tend to tree more slick trees than a hound that checks close. Age and experience will improve accuracy on a quick locator.
It's very difficult to train a hound to go on and tree the coon when others blow up slick. This ability, which includes brains and tracking ability will show up at a young age and improve with age. I have seen hounds that have to go on if a track is leaving. I don't want one of those suckers leaving a coon setting above them.

whoooaa buddy. you can say what you want, but up here in the north a dog is worthless if we cant roll coon out all season to them.
like i said. they are called COONDOGS for a reason and if i cant hunt them all kill season and kill them as many coons as i want they arent coondogs. i have an intense tree dog here and as far as im concerned every tree i walk to and look at a coon on the outside he gets one (IN KILL SEASON). NO i dont kill doubles, tripples, quadrooples out. only singles. but if you have to worry about feeding a dog too many coon they dont stay around. hell i like killing coons. that was the first reason anyone ever thought of having a "coondog" in the first place
Most big competition dogs here in Indiana are Hide dogs all kill season....... you want to know why we have alot of winners..... i'd say thats a small part of it
the first thing that makes a TREE dog start to miss is praising them
Ive got a 3 yr old walker male thats a slick treer. the first time i had him out when kill season started he struck and treed not even ten min after cutting him loose...all he has done is slicked since then Ill cut him loose sometimes and he will just start hammering on the first tree he comes too...thought i had me a dandy but turned out to be a big disappointment...tried the switch and walking around the tree thing but most of the time is pure nonsense...the other night he slicked on a tree about two inches around with maybe two branches on it...i was like you gotta be kiddin me
can he tree a coon? has he?
when a dog slick trees it can be lots of reasons.... alot of dogs i have seen like that is treeing squirrels!!! alot of people think thats nonsense but its not! sounds like you got a real problem .....or project on your hands. if he is that bad. i would resort to beating, not switching. give him something to think about.

You will do your self a big faver if you do the home werk on what the dogs ansesters started like and finished in to.
yup treed and had the meat the first time i ever had him out...shot it out to him and nothing but slicks since...its almost ridiculos sometimes and sometimes he will strike a little bit and then tree...he has always been very tight mouthed. When he treed the coon the first night he struck one time then a min or two later treed
An old hunting buddy who is now passed used to say a young dog hardly ever lies. They are too timid to tree unless they are sure a coon is up there they just won't tree. He said a dog learns how to lie when he gets older. I've found that to be true. Particularly back in the day when we thought a dog that was starting to tree at a year and a half old was coming right along.
