if he is bad at it but is mentally tough and can take a real ass whippin and still has the drive to go tree again i would resort to that. SOmetimes all you have to do is hunt them harder.
i wouldnt worry about how many coons you drop. hell they are coondogs and called that for a reason and if you can only shoot a few coons a year to them because they slick bad than what is the point in having the dog.
you should roll coon out to them , and make them absolute afraid to slick. SURE you are going to get a bad track or just come up with no coon every once in a while and thats something you will just have to live with... use common sense, there are dogs that blow in and just jam a slick and totally dont finish the track and there are dogs that work their balls off and just come up with no coon. use your head. i think its pretty simple, just takes time and patience
Yep, the only thing I would add is if your dog is tracking north and trees. Come in, check the tree, tell the dog 'SLICK TREE" and go north calling him to you. If he doesn't come with you, you haven't done your work at home. Get him out of the woods and take him home and teach him he has to come when called. If he does come with you try to get him to the 3 o'CLOCK AND 6 O"CLOCK position to cut the track of the same coon if posible. The switch depends on how much experience in the woods he has. If he knows to check and doesn't then I would start switching and / or praise more on a tree with a coon.
