* The cast has just left the Wayne County Fairgrounds. They'll have a 25-minute drive to their destination. Get ready.
* They have arrived and will be casting the hounds momentarily!
* UKC's new Full Elimination rules, that include a few slight variations of regular event running rules, are in effect. Those rules are noted in the rulebook and I'll explain further if any of them come into play here.
* Hounds are lined up! Collared. OFF! And with that the hunt is on!
* Minute is up. Penny struck first for 100!
* Scar struck min for 75!
Both hounds are not far out in front of the cast. Ferris now in for 50, also in the same general area.
* Penny treed for 125! Cookie struck for 25 (with a line under it).
* Penny shuts up and two-minute clock is on her.
* Clock is broke on Penny.
* Clock back on Penny.
* Penny has left her tree and is minused 125.
Remove that line under Cookies' strike points.
* Six-minute clock now working on all hounds. Penny is the one breaking it a few times and the only one they have heard in a bit, says Trevor. Bright moon hanging over them this morning.
* Penny broke the clock again and is hitting up.
* Sparks says' "go big or go home, TREE PENNY!" 125. Same general area she had been working.
* Uh-oh...... Penny left again. Judge Blevins gives her a second 125 demerrit. Ouch.
* Trevor says the handlers are getting comfortable in this spot. Cookie is now being heard approximately 500 yards to the east of the cast. Ferris is off to their south, about 350 yards from the cast.
* This year the Grand 16 is being sponsored by Yoder Nylon & Razor Hunting Gear. Marty Yoder and Johnny Wadkins teamed up on this sponsorship giving each of the owners of the Grand 16 a new pair of boots w chaps, a Razor hunting vest, a non-spill water bowl and one of their new heavy tie-out stakes. Yoder and Wadkins also sponsored the $2,000 purse money for the Warm-Up Slams held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. We really appreciate their support and sponsorship of these events. Thanks to the both of them for this!
* Additonally, the Final Four recieved a hunting light courtesy of Crystal Light Company. Thank-you Brett Nelson!
* 30 minutes in and no other changes yet. The cast can hear Cookie, Ferris, and Penny who hasn't given up on what's been stumping her a bit. Scar seems to have went quiet for a good while now. JR Gray says he has her showing to be nearly a mile away now but should be able to hear her if she opens in the area she's in at the moment.
* Penny TREED AGAIN, 125! She is apprx 400 yards from the cast. A coon here would help her cause for sure.
* Seems like Penny is sticking to this one, while the cast skirts a along a tree line between a corn field and a bean field. They are getting close fairly quickly.
* Tree is dead, Penny is handled, and the cast is shining her tree. Big leaning tree with a bunch of brush around the base of the tree. 47 remining in the hunt.
* Lots of squalling but nothing yet, says TWade.
** No anything, circle Pennys' strike and tree points. She is recast with 53 minutes gone.
* The world has went quiet, at least for now. The six-minute clock is working on Ferris, Scar, and Cookie.
* There's Penny, put her back on the card for 25 strike.
* Guess Penny is parked again and the stationary is now running on her. Thought we were "going big" Curtis?? Changing the game plan? lol.
* Sparks has now called Penny treed, for 125. She's apprx 150 to the southeast of the cast. They'll be easing that way in a minute.
Ferris is having himself an old fashioned beanfield chase to their southwest, says TWade.
* Penny is handled and they are shining her second tree, with merely 22 minutes remaining. Ferris is now also hooked up off in the distance, says TWade, and Lee Varner is planning to make a call shortly here.
* No dice but Pennys' tree is circled. Cast is walking away from the tree.
* Cookie treed, 125! She is only about 150 yards to the north of the cast. Tree Ferris for 125! He is apprx 800 yards to the southwest of the cast. Penny is now recast. All in this order.
* Stop.... 2-minutes running on Cookie.
* Penny struck for 25, with a line under those points.
* Ouch... the 2 caught Cookie. Minus those 125 tree points. The cast redirects and heads towards Ferris.
* JR Gray says he's showing Scar at about .8 treeing but can't hear her, says TWade. Onward towards Ferris with time running out.
* The 90-minute clock has expired. The only thing left at this point is to score Ferris.
One of the differences under the Full Elimination rules is such that a dog can win a cast without a total score of plus points. However, in that case and where it currently stands, a dog that has plus or circled tree points wins over a dog that has no tree points or minus tree points only. Therefore, Scar can't win (no tree points) nor can Cookie (no plus or circle tree points). Ferris can obvilously win with a circle or plus tree. All 16 handlers were versed on this in Saturday's handler meeting and these four are all well aware of their current situation as they are headed to score this last tree. Interesting scenario for sure.
* The cast has now arrived at Ferris' tree and he is handled. Shining.
* Trevor noted that they have seen five or six coons sitting up while walking. Just seems like they have not been down in a while.
* This last tree is a bigger tree on the edge of the bean field. Ferris fans, keep your fingers crossed.
* Finally..... there's a hoop and a holler; plus him up... Ferris has him!
* TWade confirms they have the winning coon on film!!!! Ferris Wins! Varner wins!
Congrats to all the owners and handlers in the Grand 16!
A huge congratulations to LEE VARNER and FERRIS! An old fashioned late summer Indiana bean field chase, and putting that critter in a tree on the edge of the field, makes After Dark Ferris the 2023 NATIONAL GRAND NITE CHAMPION OF AUTUMN OAKS!
