Got a pretty new dog that showed a faint positive. Vet wants 30 days of doxy, 30 days of nothing, then a couple shots then 30 more days of no activity. That's fine if there is no other safe alterative just seeing if there is another way. Thanks.

yes. ivomec monthly for 18-24 months will kill them all

I know you looking for alternatives other than the shots, but I had one recently that tested positive and my vet gave him 2 shots 24hrs apart called Immiticide, I dropped him off, he stayed overnight and I got him the next day. They only had me rest him for 6weeks, since he was a hunting dog, but they said normally it would only be 30days rest for a house dog. It was $500 total. This has been the only dog I’ve even owned that had heartworms so I can’t say I’m very knowledgeable on the subject, but this worked.

I cured one about 40 years ago with Atguard pig wormer, then years later I cured one with sheep wormer pills, Lamasole I think. I don't know if you can even buy those now. As a preventative I use to give them one part ivermec mixed with 9 parts water. Now I use the recipe that Steve Morrow with Saltlick kennels posted on here years ago. It's ivermec, Pyrantel, and Praz. AS said earlier, the ivomec will kill the heartworms.

Over them you might need your head examined....
The shots with the 30 days rest is the reccommended treatment anythong other than that is like playing russian rulet every sixth try will likley be failure. Give it a try.....

I cured 7 or 8 dogs of having heart worms…two dogs had them pretty bad…one of those a vet wouldn’t treat on account he thought the dog wouldn’t live through the treatment…she was pregnant, wormy and loaded with heart worms…the vet wormed her and put her on vitamins and I put her through the heart worm treatment and she was back to a healthy looking dog in now time…even had a nice litter of pups…

Back then the treatment was very expensive like 3 to 5 hundred dollars for treatment and no guarantee the dog would live over the treatment because of potential liver failure…

The reason for resting the dog during treatment and post treatment is this…dog hunts hard and too many heart worms break loose and plug the heart or a main artery and you’ll have a dead dog…the article I read was written by two veterinarians on how to treat with levamisole and why to rest the dog post treatment…
