My real, education, started around, 7 years ago, my female had 9 pups, had them all booked. The first day, she layed, on two of them, i put her in a bigger box, she layed on another, i fed the rest of the dogs, checked on her, she only had 4 pups, she had eaten two pups. I brought the 4 left in to my house, at 3 days old, i found a recipe, on the internet, a lady in Cal. raised collies, it said 2 cans of evaporated milk, 2 cans of water, 4 table spoons, of regular yogurt, 4 egg yolks, 1 table spoon of kero molasses, makes around 1 qt and one half. I fed them 2cc per pup, to start, if you gave them as much as they want, some will go in to their lungs, and they get sick, and die. Feed around the clock every 2 to 3 hours, till they are 3 weeks old, then increase the milk, and time between feedings, till you can get them to drink their milk, out of a dish. This last litter, their mother, would growl at her pups and me, she would come to the door, trying to tell me, something was wrong, i had her on amoxicillin, but stopped it the 10th days, at 11 days she killed the biggest female pup, so i pulled her out, took her to the vet, he said, she had a bad infection of the uterus. When females get a bad infection, while nurseing pups, they might kill them all, they don't know what they are doing, you can look, it up in the vet, books, they are in a lot of pain, it ain't their fault, and pups want their milk, so i raised 6 more on the bottle, a lot of work, and you get attached to them. I still have the first 4 pups, i raised on the bottle, all still are here, we are buddys. And when, you get done feeding them, you get a warm, wet wash rag, and massage, their private parts, so they can go to the bath room. And the first litter was around 3 weeks old, they smelled, so i took all to the bath room and gave them all a bath, the male pup, seemed to have 8 legs, as he did not like the water.

So we just got done hand raising 7 pups after the dam died after an emergecy c-section. It's a hell of a lot of work. But I've also been raising another breed for over 20 years and have some great suggestions.

Myra Savant is a well known repro person. She has a facebook page with tons of information and lots of knowledgeable people. Good resource to keep on hand.

I use her custom formula which includes goats milk, eggs, yogurt, liver water, olive oil and karo syrup. I can tell you we went through a ton of formula. But have very healthy puppies.

For your bitches that act off after whelping, keep calcium on hand. Best is Oral Cal or Calsorb. Generic human calcium supplements with vit d or at the least tums. You can't feed too much as it will flush through their system if there's too much, water soluble. Keep giving through weaning.

A good round pool or whelping box with pigrails to push the bitch off the sides will help with them not laying on pups as easily.

Advent of wireless cameras like Wyze or Ring products, mean you can set up an infrared camera and watch from your phone instead of checking on them and disturbing them all the time.

I've had the best and worst happen in all my years. And for some reason I think, that's it, I'm done, never again....and yet here I am planning our next generation.

I really, think i am done raiseing pups, but then, i think may be one or more, in this litter, could be the best, i've ever raised, there could be several, World Class, Hounds, in this last litter.
