Question for the metal workers

I am building a new dog kennel and will be using horse panels for the wire. I am planning on using 2x2 angle for the posts and the bottom front and back and also the bottom front to back between each run. I am making the runs 4x8 and 5x8 foot and this kennel will be 60 feet long. On top of posts I plan to use flat metal also 2 inch to tie it all together. My question is do I use 3/16 or 1/4 angle? Any opinions will be appreciated, Thanks metal worker or not!

Not a metal worker but after farming for a few years maybe I qualify. 1/4 for the posts. Probably could do 3/16 for the runs or 1/8. What are you going to do about the rust? Paint ?

micooner, You got me thinking about the rust. I'm not a rich man but trying to build a kennel that will last. This metal isn't cheap as you probably know. I have had the chain link kennels for a long time, and anyone that has had them knows that when you have a male dog and he hikes his leg on that stuff it isn't long until it is rusted thru. I have repaired that stuff and its a never ending battle. Thats why I thought about using steel. Do you or anyone else have any suggestions of how to make a kennel that will last? I have thought about treated 4x4s and the horse panels, then again I think some dogs might chew the wood. Whats some ideas on building a good one ? I already have the concrete pad. I need some ideas and soon . Thanks

dog pens

I have used the 2x4 horse panels for years. I just got 6 1/2 ft T-post and drove them in till there was 5 ft above ground. I made a gate panel out of 1" galvanizes pipe welded together 16 ' long and then a gate about
3 ft wide out of the 1' pipe with hinges and latches from chain link stock. serves me pretty good however If your hounds are inclined to dig you might want to pour a couple of inches of concrete inside.

For the money, I’ve switched over to using the “Retriever” brand dog pen from Tractor Supply Co. They sell a 5x10 version or 10x10. But the cheapest way to go is buy the 5x10 and buy the “expansion” panels or “extension” panels, I forget how they advertise them. It will make a 10x10 6’ tall pen. All welded wire thats powder coated. Has good latch on a heavy duty gate. And you can make it whatever length or width you want because the panels are 5’ wide. They are strong enough I just put 12’ 2x4’s across the top and attach with pipe straps. Then screw my tin right to the 2x4’s. That way I have covered pens and dogs cant climb out either.

Use boards on the bottom 2 feet

We have 2x6 on the bottom +\-2 feet of our kennel with welded wire horse panel above that. Leave enough space below the bottom board to be able wash the pen out. Males can’t pee on the wire that way, so the kennel requires less maintenance. You can easily replace the 2x6’s as needed but they will last a long time.

I would post a picture of the set up but can’t figure out how to.

I appreciate the replies and ideas.I probably didn't give enough information. I am building this on a concrete pad that is 60 feet long and 19 feet wide. It has a 60 foot car port that is 16 feet wide already erected on the concrete. So it will have a roof and don't want to build attaching to the carport posts .Keep the suggestions coming it gives me more ways to think about what to do. I am planning to build a building of some kind on front of this kennel to let dogs get into and out of the cold, like maybe dog houses and a gate to get into kennel and extend it in front beyond carport a little if I need to and maybe set posts in ground so the building will be big enough to store dog food etc.

I use a soy based primer from the co-op, it's about 80 bucks a gallon. I painted the hog floor frames with its and they have 0 rust in 5 yrs. So if it can handle that, it will keep your metal in great shape for a very very long time.

i built mine out of galvanized 1 1/2 conduit from lowes and cattle pannels 22 years ago, there still holding dogs, the bottom pipe will eventully rust out because of the urine, but the cattle panel has 0 rust, grown dogs can stick there heads through the bigger holes, and if you put pups in them you will have to zip tie some dog wire to the panels, but for the money if you can weld i bought a welder which i still use, and the material, for half of what prefab kennels will cost you, i also have a set of prefab high dollor kennels that i inheirted, the bottom is rusted out on them as well. the only way i know is to put cinderblocks down 3 feet high and build kennel on top of that.

Just trying to make a decent kennel. Materials are so darned high priced. The conduit jake mentioned is now $40 for a 10 foot piece for an example. The metal I was going to get was going to be $1900 and something for 1/4 inch. I think I am going to go with 4x4 treated posts and attach my horse panels above boards like joeluchbucket did his. Thanks again for the replies and ideas and how you made yours. I'd put a picture on here when its finished but had problems trying to put pictures on this site in past. If interested pm and I can send to a email.

Kennels

Here Is SOMETHING DIFFERENT YOU DONT SEE MUCH OF, .....Back in 2010 I used a Shortened portion of a Junked CAMPER - Mobil Home Frame, 7 feet Wide x 28 Long, Not counting the tongue. We Used 51/4 Treated Deck Boards placed 11/4 inch apart for the floor secured with 1/4 STAINLESS SCREWS /NUTS We Used 2x4 Horse Panels on the Sides and 3 partitions I welded 11/2 Galvanized Pipe to Frame the Sides and Top Rail THEN MOUNTED TREATED 2/4s around Sloped top Rail To Secure a Metal Top with screws Painted and Coole Sealed just once Best Thing I ever Done... It is MOBILE and HEAVY BUILT with The original dual axles/ Equalizers still under it.... It can be moved with a small colorado pick up, In the winter I can move it to Get More Sun and clean under it and Summertime I can Move it Back under the Shade Trees The Floor is about 30 inches from the ground Keeps Dogs Dry and Clean Its on year 13 and some 11/2 wide metal Band cross members could use some attention BUT OVERALL THIS IS BEST KENNEL I EVER USED IT WILL HOLD MOST ANY ANIMAL YOU EVER WANNA PUT IN IT Framed the doors with 1 inch Pipe and horse panels There probably will come a time that the RUST WILL PREVENT ME FROM MOVING IT But its still portable after 12 years continuous daily use...Wash it out with water hose if needed For pups I lay 1x1 wire over the floor .........JUST SOMETHING DIFFERENT
