Though no coonhound in UKC’s history can touch the sheer number of pups produced by Lipper, the boom of top stud dogs that hit the coonhound world in the early to mid-90s was impressive to see. While I wish I was around to experience it first hand, the impact these dogs made is still being felt to this day. With that being said, I introduce our next stud dog, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Nocturnal Nailor.

Nailor hasn’t produced the most pups in the Walker breed, but he is second to Lipper, just a couple hundred pups shy of hitting the 4,000 pup mark. And although he hasn’t produced the most titled hounds, he is firmly in the Top 3 with just shy of 500 nite hunt titled pups. I believe that combo, in addition to the effect he had on the world of competition coon hunting makes him a good choice for this week’s column.

Nailor was born on Halloween in 1990, as 1 of 2 males in a litter of 7. And of those 7 pups, 4 made at least NITECH with both males achieving their GRNITECH title. Nailor wasted no time getting pups on the ground with his first 2 litters hitting the ground just shy of his 2nd birthday in early October 1992. In early 1993, the first of many Nailor litters that had overwhelming success hit the ground. The dam was GRNITECH ‘PR’ Abney’s Sac River Fancy and together they produced 8 pups with half achieving a title, GRNITECH ‘PR’ The Ultimate Brutis, NITECH ‘PR’ Nocturnal Rattler, NITECH ‘PR’ Wells Lockdown Stihl, and GRCH NITECH ‘PR’ Shez Fancy Too. Just a couple months later in May of 1993 another Nailor litter, this time out of GRNITECH Oklahoma Quick Queen hit the ground with 4 of the 6 pups titling out. Those 4 were NITECH ‘PR’ Coyles Epworth Nitro, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Nocturnal Slammer, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Nocturnal Tuff, and GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Lickety Split Libby.

Heading into 1994, Nailor was already making a name for himself in the stud pen. He had a ton of litters in ’94 with 4 that I made note of. The first was out of Nailor and GRNITECH ‘PR’ Hardwood Freckles, born April 1994. This litter had 7 pups with three titling out, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Nocturnal Skipper, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Nocturnal Tipper, and NITECH ‘PR’ Nocturnal Cruising Pepper. Two litters born in June of 1994 left their own mark. The first was out of GRNITECH ‘PR’ Deskins’ Windy and 3 of the 6 pups titled, including NITECH ‘PR’ Parkins RT 34 Boss, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Abbotts Yadkin River Cruise, and NITECH ‘PR’ Lee’s Yadkin Rvr Nocturnal Nellie. The other was out of GRNITECH ‘PR’ HiCountry Pocket Rocket with 3 of the 6 finishing including GRNITECH ‘PR’ Hard Rock Cafe, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Scott’s Tree Rattling Rocket, and NITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Nocturnal Thrill. Finishing up that 4-month stretch was a litter out of NITECH ‘PR’ High Dollar Jazz that had 4 of the 8 title, NITECH ‘PR’ Cooks Cajun, CH NITECH ‘PR’ Nocturnal Sailor, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Sac River Terra, and NITECH ‘PR’ Gann’s Nocturnal Jane.

Nailor’s streak stayed red hot into the mid-90s. I’m going to quickly highlight a few litters in 1995-1996. In April 1995, a litter of 5 pups hit the ground out of Nailor and NITECH McCabe Ellie. 3 of those pups titled out, including GRNITECH ‘PR’ Nocturnal Music, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Black’s Travlein Man Major, and GRNITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Unger’s Barracuda Babe. In October 1995 a litter hit the ground with 5 of the 6 pups titling out, out of Nailor and GRNITECH ‘PR’ Abbott’s Big Horn Daisy. Those 5 were CH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Buckhorn Mtn. Nocturnal Overdrive, GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Huffs Nocturnal Ranger, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Abbotts Nocturnal Jodie, GRCH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Huffs Nocturnal Rose, and NITECH ‘PR’ Brownings Nocturnal Nellie. The next month 8 pups hit the ground out of ‘PR’ Shaffer’s Tara, with 5 titling out, including GRNITECH ‘PR’ Adams Handson Harry, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Welch’s Jack, GRNITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Pattison Hammering Harry, GRNITECH ‘PR’ Probst’s Hanna, and GRNITECH ‘PR’ Nocturnal Patty. And lastly in July of 1996, with a litter of 8 pups hitting the grounds with 4 titling out, out of Nailor and GRNITECH ‘PR’ Schmersal’s Stylish Anna. Those 4 were GRNITECH ‘PR’ Nailors Nocturnal Nitro, CH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Nocturnal Style, NITECH ‘PR’ Baker’s Brazos Nocturnal Jimbo, and GRNITECH ‘PR’ Annas Nocturnal Shana.

I could go on and on and fill up this page. Like the litter born in June of 1998 out of GRNITECH ‘PR’ Eley’s Lock Down Fancy where 4 of 6 finished out including GRNITECH ‘PR’ Deep South Jack, CH NITECH ‘PR’ Nail Down Bullet, CH GRNITECH ‘PR’ Twin Oak Nail, and NITECH ‘PR’ Eley’s Lock Down Lacy. Or the litter born in September of 1998 out of GRNITECH ‘PR’ Morgans Longbranch Brandy where 5/6 titled out; CH ‘PR’ Morgans Nocturnals Nighthawk, GRNITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Morgans Nocturnal Bones, NITECH CH ‘PR’ Morgans Nocturnal Speedyboy, GRNITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Morgans Nocturnal Crybaby, and GRNITECH ‘PR’ Chapmans Nocturnal Sugar.

As the new millennium came, Nailor was an old and gray hound, though still producing pups. And with the advancement of semen litters, Nailor’s legacy lived on. Some examples would be a litter that hit the ground in April of 2006 out of GRNITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Cedar Creek Get Back Jessie where 4 of 10 pups titled out. Those 4 were GRNITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Nocturnal X, GRNITECH GRCH ‘PR’ Nailors Southern Country Rock, NITECH ‘PR’ Grable’s Nocturnal Jezebell, and NITECH CH ‘PR’ Nocturnal Annie. And in June of 2012, 22 years after Nailor was born, he sired a litter out of GRNITECH Split Creek History Agile that saw 3 of 8 finish out, GRNITECH GRCH Nocturnal Lil Trackman Kidd, GRNITECH(2) Split Creek History Strap, and GRNITECH Split Creek History Slammer.

As of this writing, Nailor has a litter on the ground that is right around 10 months old so there is a chance that Jess has the next big-time winner right there in his back yard. I could go on for pages but I’m going to wrap it up here and get to the overall numbers for Nailor.
