Burn out

I hear quite a bit about burning a young dog out or pushing him too hard. Would appreciate your thoughts. Do you push him too hard by just hunting him a lot or is it by training too much while hunting or does it refer to trying to put them in competition too quick. Your opinion please.

Dogs

Well I've started several and some will hit a wall especially under 18 months old but most of those were just common to average young dogs that were basically done and never got any better .I don't think young dogs improve as much as some say anyway either they have it in them or they don't

This seemed to happen a lot 30 years ago, I think it was an undiagnosed tick issue or thyroid problem. These are not a new thing.

2ol2hunt, that is at least part of my question. Exactly what is meant and what causes it.

I have considered this. Years ago we would have a really nice pup or dog that would just become worthless. Don't think we ever considered a health problem.

If burn out means can you hunt one too much after it gets started then I don't think so, the man will wear out before the dog will. I've tried to hunt one down and couldn't.

I think you can hunt or push a dog to hard. Not all dogs are the same. Just like humans. Some dogs have extreme stamina and can go night after night. I think there are many variables to be considered alongside the genetic foot print that contribute to determining how hard a hound can be hunted.

Such as:
1. Physique or conformation
2. Mental toughness & desire
3. Physical and to some degree, mental health
4. What do you feed? Not all dog foods are created equal
5. Housing and Kenneling. Are they protected from the elements? Do they have a comfortable place to rest?
6. Atmosphere when at rest?
7. What does your hound do when it’s not hunting. Does it bark at everything that moves around your kennel? Does it pace all day in the run or on the chain?
8. How much time do you spend with your hounds when their not being hunted?

I’m sure there’s more to be added to the list! Bottom line is any attentive hound man or woman should be able to determine how much their hound(s) can stand regarding how much time in the woods their dog can tolerate if they’re attentive to what their dog(s) are telling them.
