Who has a line of dogs they feel are consistent in treeing and having the meat in thin game/ dry tracking conditions?
Not everyone lives in an area like that or wants that type of dog, but some of us do.
What are you hunting?

If i lived in a different part of the nation i would be looking for a hound with a different set of skill set emphasis.
By “ brainstorming” on this forum i hope to save time and money and frustration.

I think it's safe to say that you won't find a line that consistently meets those standards. You can find some dogs like that (but they aren't plentiful).

I seem to maybe have read that some of the famous lion hunters of old had that type of hounds. Or that Dale Cameron tried to breed a consistent line of dogs for tough conditions. Maybe others, too.
I had been away from hounds for 20 years and when i did get back into tree dogs, it was fiest and squirrel hunting in the ozarks for 10 years.
Since moving to western sd 3 years ago i have been looking for a coondog that hunts the way i like. I have a fiest , now 7, i kept just because he hunts squirrel to suit me. I visit missouri twice a year. The rest of the time he helps the hounds out here at night when he can get in on it. 😁

With dogs being bred these days to score points fast in hunts, we are most likely breeding for hotter nosed pop up tree dogs. The colder nosed track dogs are not being bred in large numbers these days, only by a select few for their hunting needs. I fear that the competition hunts is killing the cold nosed work a bad track up and tree it type of dog of yesterday. It will definitely be harder to find the cold nosed track dogs as time goes on with the current rules of the competition hunts. The fewer the hunters that like the cold nosed track dogs, the fear cold nosed track dogs we will have. Dave

Well you ask for the truth and I’m the man to give it. Some of ya can take it and a lot of you can’t but here it goes.
I’ve not been around this sport forever but I have been around it long enough and been to the biggest hunts money can put you in. Very few I’ve seen that can do what your asking and the few that can would not suit me night in and night out because I can’t stand to sit and listen to that mess for as long as it takes to work up that track. A dog that CAN tree those types of coon grub them up. They take a track that just ain’t much (most dogs never know exist) and they get it up and tree it!! The best ones I’ve seen come from the hills of Kentucky own by the burden boys. Shawn burden, Bobby burden. Those are flat rock bred dogs…these dogs come from flatrock thrasher. The others I’ve seen where all wipeout bred so basically you need to go back to that coma

For about 15 years I would buy 2 or 3 pups a year and start them all breeds lipper,yadkin river,dahoneys boone ,dark hollow Smokey black n tans the best young dog I had was flatrock coma and buffalo river bandit on bottom the summer was dry and most older dogs couldn't tree coons but this 16 month old pup could and he could drift a track out also had a English pup out of heavy Boyd's little Joe he was a dandy same way but he chewed heavy and I sold him I tried pups out of every breed including plotts and these two were the only ones that could really tree them consistently

Steve Biggerstaff . He produces dogs that can run lions on dry ground and trees them consistently. I asked him if they would make good coon dogs and he thought they may be too cold nosed but wasn’t sure.

Tried to look up biggerstaff. Could have been the one Melblank was talking about.
Currently taking deposits on pups.
Would not be sold until 7 months, as started dogs.
1500-2000.
All dogs sold are spayed or neutured.
Is that the right guy?

Yes that is him. I had a dry ground lion hunt a few years back the bobcat hunted with one of his buddies a few years later. I was impressed with the dogs.
