New Vet New Advice

I have young dog (almost 2 yr) that is a little bit of hard keeper. Wormed out on good feed (24/20 valu pak) just high strung and hunted hard. Already feed a egg a day but vet said up to two eggs and and cottage cheese. Sounds good except going into summer seems to be lot protein. Also started him on supplements called Platinum Performance which seems good. The thing that caught my attention is vet said I would see a 30% increase in water intake with this supplement.

Anyone have experience with feeding cottage cheese or using this supplement?

My hard keepers didn’t do well at all on ValuPak. I know there are guys who swear by it, and some of my dogs did ok on it, but the other ones I struggled with and had to mix other feed in to get their weight back up.

I’ve struggled with this type of stuff at times also. The best thing I’ve found is to put them on a self feeder of a high fat high protein feed of your choice. I’ve used eukanuba , pro plan and hi standard all with good results. Cheap high fat hamburger supplemented in helps to gain at a faster rate

COTTAGE CHEESE AND OR BUTTER MILK SMART VET, GIVE THEM ALL THEY WANT TILL YOU GET HIM IN THE SHAPE YOU WANT, YOU CAN ADD JUST A LITTLE GATOR AID TO HIS WATER , I PERSONALY WOULDNT WORRY TO MUCH ABOUT THE EGGS, ALSO RAW LIVER IS A GOOD ADDITIVE

I like the pro plan 30/20 and use it in winter but I hunt a lot in the summer and have had dogs get to hot on it. I am going try feeding pro plan and see if this dog handles the heat with it. He is by no means poor. Just a little thin looks in running shape. Daughter wanting show him so wanting add just little weight.

Anyone have experience with the platinum performance supplements?

Go to butcher and get fat leavings. Finger size everyday with feed. Can also try couple of tablespoons of "CORN OIL" Will add weight and shine to hair
Additional water intake with the supplement tells me high salt /sodium content. Fluid will make dog appear to gain weight but it will be all water.

Get a better grade feed.

Digestible protein and non digestible makes a big difference
Weight is not put on with protein..
Fat and Carbs are for energy and to put the weight on. Protein is for muscles

Young dog may start filling out soon with maturity.
High strung . May just be high metabolism.
Unless he looks like he is being starved he may just be that body type.

I work in the thoroughbred industry have for years we have used platinum products for along time for horses it’s really good stuff. They make all different kinds it works. I had a hard keeper several years ago I found feeding him twice a day helped tremendously even tho I fed the same amount each day I just cut it in half 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 after hunting or if I wasn’t hunting that night just evening. Give him time to digest properly and he could hold onto more nutrition that way.

Platinum Performance

We won some at a hunt a few years ago. I gave it mainly to Mafia. He was getting up there in years and we'd had him on Dog Forte. Seemed to be good stuff to help him maintain weight and energy. Didn't stink as bad as the Dog Forte lol.

10 lbs of hamburger [ the cheapest kind}
1 lg box of total cereal
1 lg box oatmeal
1 jar of wheat germ
1 1/4 cup of unsulfered molasses
1 1/4 cup of vegtable oil
10 raw eggs
10 envolopes of unflavored gelatin
a pinch of salt
mix all ingredients together, like you would a meatloaf

Most do about 1/2 lb of this mixture a day. Divide into freezer bags.

If you’re feeding a decent dog food and they aren’t wormy and get finicky about eating you better have their kidneys checked. I’ve been down that road twice over the years. They’ll slowly get thinner and thinner over a long period of time. Finally had to put them to sleep.

Lard Cracklings

Find a meat processor, butcher etc.. that renders lard. They will have cracklings you can buy. Put a couple chunks or cracklings on his feed each day. This will put weight on and slick him up. In two weeks you will be amazed how he looks.

Mix a can of mackerel in with a good dog feed. You can buy the can mackerel at dollar tree.$1.00 a can.
This will put weight on a dog.
Plus I give mine a little Olive oil in the feed also.
