Last night I decided to take a hound that is 10 years old and hasn't been in over a year. He showed the same heart to hunt, the same energy to tree and the same desire to tree one that he did when he was 5. I did load him and take him out of the truck to protect his joints. LOL We talk everyday on here about getting dogs to do this or that better. Finding one with the heart and drive goes a long way in finding enjoyment in this sport. Only question I couldn't answer that a friend asked was. Why is his name MONGO. I didn't name him. He had that name when I purchased him. But, I think the name fits. Now it has an addition to it. "Ole Mongo".

Yes heart and drive is a necessity. 1st thing I look for and if it is not there someone with more time and patience than me will be owning that pup

It’s amazing how good these “ole Warriors” do after being laid up. I’ve notice the same thing from a older hound or 2 over the years. I have found myself recollecting old hunts with a old dog when I break him out. I guess old dogs are just like us, they still love the game even if they are a little sore next day.

Isn't that the truth. I had an old dog named Mongo once. He loved to saunter out and just tree coons. He never got in a hurry and made it look so easy. I would turn him loose occasionally until he went blind. He had a rough life. He suffered a heat stroke, got hit by a car, recovered from tick desease and heartworms, developed arthritis and thyroid desease but he was a tuff old dog and loved to go hunting up until he went blind.

Heck my son has a old dog and we hunt him pretty regular. I have probably had as much fun as my boy has had with him. Took him out Monday night. Made 2 drops , 2 trees and 2 singles in about 20 minutes of hunting. It's hard to beat a good Old dog.

These dogs are born with the right tools...they might do it slower and have arthritis and shouldn’t hunt them more than once a week but they are dependable in getting the job done...

My jodie dog. At 10. Her last hunt.We had two young dogs with her that came back to the truck but she wasn't comming back to she treed a coon. She had two litters of pups and I made a pup out of each litter a GR night . Still have one he's 8 and a Gr night grandson. click on the link and click on the video

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for old dogs that were coon dogs, I never get tired of hunting an old dog that is definitely a coon dog. Let others train them young dogs, just give me a seasoned coon treeing dog to hunt. I would not give a good old dog for a truck load of pups or untrained young dogs. Dave

I am on the other side of the fence from you on this one. Once they become Mr. Consistent I am ready to find me another one to start working. I love their challenge of starting a young dog, it's like a game of chess. Although Sometime I do wonder why.

I've always found it hard watching a good one lose a step. I'd sooner sell one then bury it. Dogs don't get old around here.
