What does everyone do with their dogs when they go away. I’m not talking for a long period of time just for a weekend. Right now I always take dogs with me but having some life changes that might not allow it. I don’t have anyone close to take care of my dogs for the weekend. I’m thinking self feeders and plenty of water and they should be good for the weekend. Thoughts?

before I Retired 14 years ago, I used self feeders and 5 gallon buckets for water. in 1997 I was working 8 days straight 515 miles from home so was on the road almost 2 days of "6 days off"

In the winter I used a Nelson Blue Devil bucket heater Model 50203.. that one uses a 1 1/4 inch EMT pipe to hold the heating element... also works to hold the bucket in place..LOL!.. It is the best heater I found but cost now is double what it was.. now around $75
But they do last several years with care.. I have one I got in 2002--
you will need to clean the lime deposits off it when you no longer need to keep water from freezing
be forewarned that if you will be gone for very long you probably will want to start feeding the dry feed in them about 2 weeks ahead of time otherwise most dogs will eat 3 days of food in a bit over 1 day.

I used to go away for long weekends I would feed heavy for 2 days before I left just kept the bowl full. Then would fill it before I left and they would still have food when I got home. 5 gal pal for water.

I don’t get to vacation on account of dogs...maybe three days max if really wanting to go somewhere...earlier times a son or a grandson fed my dogs...my son is 110 miles away and grandson is away in college nowadays...

I feed extra before I leave for two or three days...
All kennels have automatic watering...during the rainy season I got a sharpshooter shovel and dug a main trench and branched off to all kennels and then ran 3/4” PVC and installed faucets and watering devices...did this many years ago and it is low maintenance...

We don’t get much freezing weather but when we do I block and drain the watering system for a few days...

The other thing I do is charge the barking collars and make sure the dogs will have these collars on...

Training dogs is not so much about quantity, it's more about timing, and the right situations...After that it's up to the dog....A hunting dog is born...
