Bought a 5 year old dog about 8 months ago. Hunted him 4-5 nights a week since I got him. Had 2 UKC wins but hadn't been hunted much alone...got him to hunt alone in about a month and he would be just as accurate as any other dog. Eventually would range out as far as he needed to in order to tree: sometimes 50 yards, sometimes 3/4 of a mile, etc. With other dogs, mostly a first strike dog and 1/2nd tree. Hunts all night as hard as anything.

Over the last month or so, hunting solo, first run he might go/might not, but any attempt to recast or drive to another bush, etc he just stands there. Literally. Kick snow in his face, yell at him, switch him...nothing. Just takes it and cowers. Walk with him on the leash away from the truck or back into the bush and it is like pulling dead weight: digging his heels in, won't hardly walk. Let him off and he doesn't move. Stood in 6" of ice water last week for 30 minutes without moving. He ends up back at the truck and hides underneath.

Thought it might have been his feet were sore. Laid him up for 10 days with lots of ointment and whatnot on his feet...took him tonight. Slick tree with no track about 300 yards in and then a repeat of above.

Not looking for someone to say "just shoot him" but...any thoughts? Isn't coonhunting supposed to be fun ??

Sounds like a "me too" dog. They can be fun and worth having... but just a dog that you take with a pack. At five years old I doubt you change it. Tough to say without actually being around the dog. Hope you get it worked out. Good luck.

I may would take him to the vet just to be checked. I had a nite champion years ago tjat stopped hunting and acting crazy. His stomach was all jacked up and took him 3 months to recover. Just a idea if you think hes really out of sorts.

Had same problem but mine would run back to truck and hide underneath it would hunt with another dog but slick tree after slick tree. He had got sick from tick bite and nearly died in July tested thyroid and it was low got it up to 2.4 level went back to treeing coons,still acts scared to death by himself turn pup loose with him he will get treed with coon and the pup never leaves my side. Gonna try and raise level little more to see if that fixes his problem he acts fine around the house. He was a really nice dog before problem started Nt.ch with wins towards Gr.nt. I would have his thyroid level checked and all dogs are different but shoot for a 3.0 level and higher to see if he improves pain in the butt giving a pill in the morning and in the evening but made a difference in him.
