Slick after success

Alright guys, so I have got a super nice, well bred 20 month old male that is showing lots of promise. Hunting in thin coon around here. Most of the time when he gets treed its a den or he has one on the outside. However problem is that if you knock one out to him or praise him up on the tree, every dump after that he gets tree happy and will slick. Whats everyone suggest? The dog is super sensitive so I'm not gonna be too hard on him. This has been his only vice.

Sounds like a good problem to have. Don't kill any to him and the coons will get thicker, win win.

quit knocking coon out to him. I've seen several dogs do this. get to excited. doesn't sound like he needs to be fed a coon just hunt him.

The obvious answer is stop shooting him coons and petting him up on trees.
But if you want to continue to shoot them out, I've had the most success working on slick trees as follows...
I would focus on hunting in areas where you can cast from tree to tree, no one and done spots. After you shoot him a coon and cast him, walk into his next tree, and leave him untied. Briefly (but thoroughly) shine without saying a word, then walk away if he missed and apply a light collar correction. Not enough to make him glow in the dark, but enough to make him leave.
If he's accurate until you shoot one, his behavior thereafter is man made. You just gotta eliminate the bad behavior without impacting the good. Lots of people get too rough on a dog because they take it personal when the dog messes up. Good trainers learn how to communicate with them in a manner they understand.

Y'all are confirming what I was thinking. He gets hunted with some.young dogs that need some knocked out to them so kind of a touchy deal. He was bad about slicking when I got him and id simply popped him enough to get his attention and send him on. You can watch him on a tracker checking his tree from every direction before he sits down now unless he's had one knocked out already that night then he just gets to the first one the coon has touched and blows the top out. I'm thinking he will come out of it in time especially with our kill season being over now. Thanks for the replies.

Learned the hard way if you got a hard treeing natural THEY DON"T NEED A BUNCH OF PRAISE AT THE TREE.
Will get them to slick treeing .Couple pats on head is enough
And yes had them get slicky after knocking down coon.

Your complete post was really good but I wanted to comment further on what I copied from your post...

You just gotta eliminate the bad behavior without impacting the good. I agree with comment quite a bit...

The idea is to correct the dog without creating fear in the dog towards the trainer...I can correct my dog without me having any angry feelings towards the dog...the dog learns that you are correcting and not making it personal and the dog thinking that you despise him...the dog knows you are working together and there is no reason to fear you and the dog knows you like him no matter what...the dog starts learning when you give a certain command it means to stop that behavior...if the dog wants forgiveness I pet him up and move on and expect the dog to do right...

If the penalty is big I won’t let the dog come in, I scold him back away from me for a little while and then I call him in to give him forgiveness when I decide...
The dog is not afraid of me during correction...he respects me and there’s a big difference between being afraid and respecting...

Every now and then I have to raise the level of correction but the respect is still intact...

It’s about correcting unacceptable behavior without losing our cool...the dog knows the difference and responds accordingly...

It’s best to train in a controlled environment as much as possible and be consistent with keeping cool and using the same verbal commands when the dog is being corrected...

.

I picked up something from all these post that I would like to share. Simley asked a good question. That was obvious to most. Smiley then came back and said you guys confirmed what he was thinking. So why did Smiley need reinforcement on what he thought was the right thing to do.

Really very simple. In the sport of coon hunting you have to be more than a HUNTER. Smiley wants to be a HUNTER. I did once when I was young. Many of you did also. But we all realized that the Hunting and dropping the dog over and over again had to take a back seat to being a DOG TRAINER. It becomes more important to tree one right than it does to just hunt and lets see what happens.

If you just want the hunter part. Buy a trained dog and hunt and harvest till your wore out. If you want to train your own coondogs. You have to take a different approach to this sport. The reward to being a trainer is not the harvest, but the lack of mistakes your dog makes between the time you drop him till he is back on the leash.

Ruben/Cory ......good advise here ....
BUT.... why interfer when it comes to slicks....the dog made the mistake, now let it reason it's mistake out...after all a dog knows ! or at least it's been my xperience that an "intelligent" dog will leave a slick on it's own, if given time .
By interfering we r just makeing a man made dog......that will respond to stimulants.....no thinking needed......
Those kind r prevelant in today's hunts.

for sure..

A good green switch has sure done wonders for me over the past decade for all sorts of problems and faults. Most little kids need to be corrected and taught just like a young hound screwing up.

The line of dogs i hunt and most of the lines of today have plenty of tree in them. No need to worry about beating the tree out of them. If one simply shuts down after taking correction then in my honest opinion the dog will never make anything above average. If average suits you for a good ol country coondog then by all means let it get by with faults all night thinking it will just wise up and correct itself.

The best dogs I have ever turned lose were absolutely fearful of me but at the same time knew what I expected and aimed to please. This is what exceeds average and you could really have something special.

A limber switch and my displeasure calling him a bad dog and sending him on is how I would do it as well.

He's just getting over excited and tree happy.. This has nothing to do with giving coons hurting a dog.. If it does knock him in the head and move on...

These are hunting dogs, bred to catch game and kill it.. You've just got a highly excited one.. I'd be surprised if some correction and age won't fix this right up..
