Thought it would be fun to see what everybody thinks about how this will end up. Especially if you have had one similar. I have a 22 month old walker dog that had not been hunted till the last month and half. This dog is treeing coon ahead of my older dog and is an excellent tree dog. Extremely accurate. Now here's the deal. He is almost stone silent. Might open once or twice on a coon. But will open trail on off game. Will he stay silent on coon or will he start opening more?

I used to own one just like you described, he was dead silient on a coon, but fully open on a hot deer track for maybe 100 yards or so. He never changed, but they are all different, so he may or may not ever open on coons. I say enjoy him for what he is, never hurts to have a silient dog, especially if you are hunting him with open dogs. Dave

In the 80"s my friend had a dead silent Walker female. He never could break her from running rabbits. Yep, rabbits. On a rabbit, she barked every time her foot hit the ground. She never opened on a coon track.

Dave I'm gonna keep him. In this day of empty treeing idiots he's a refreshing change. I honestly don't think he'll ever open much on a coon. But just wanted to see what people thought and I will add to this thread in about 6 months to tell everyone what he is doing.

I think you will be pleased that you keep him. I enjoy hearing a open trailing dog run a coon, I also, enjoy hearing a ACCURATE dog treed . Accuracy matters to me above all other traits a dog may have, I rate ACCURACY at the top of my list. I can look at all the empty trees that I want to see without ever leaving my front porch, I definitely do not need a dog to show me any empty trees. Lol. Dave p.s. As a famous rifleman once said " only accurate rifles are interesting" and I feel the same way about coon dogs only accurate coon dogs are interesting to me.

Gonna fill you in on a secret of the trade, hunt him on water. Over the years we've seen quite a few that didn't open much. Chey would hunt them on water north of here where there are lots of creeks, duck lakes and flooded timber. Many that opened very little will start opening and quite often continue it. The few that remained silent after several trips there were more likely to stay that way.

People say you can't do it, but I made a still mouthed dog nearly mouthy once hunting him out of a boat. Between the water, brush/jungle I was sending him into, and screaming hot track after screaming hot track, he went from silent to wide open in a summer. Almost ruined him in the process, but it sure was fun.

Mostly though, I think tight mouthed dogs are just gonna stay that way. I'd even go so far as to say that most get a little quieter with age.

Had one of those back in the 70's never changed and he was hunted extremely hard in the mountains and in big swamp land. Wide open on deer and dead silent on coon I had a little bell on his collar...lol
