Culls... Maybe not?

Got your attention, didn't I? What if culls aren't all culls? Here's an idea. Sure, skiddish, spooky, are traits few want. But a young dog blisters tracks, refuses to tree...or weak treedogs... Not gonna make a coondog. Cull it..or......
Example: knew a Bluetick male, about 3 years ago. Didn't want to tree. Sure pat the tree, he would bark, quit and he would too. He was vicious when the coon hit the ground. Was about to be culled. I contacted a local yote hunter. He said he would try him. I convinced owner to let them try. No papers unless he made a good dog. Turned him into 2 races. First one, not much. Second one bayed the yote. It was on after that. Dog would run the yote to catch, no quit in him. He is used as a lead dog now.
What if a weak treedog would prefer bear? Bobcat? After all, 2 outstanding coondogs, bred great, but maybe coon is not it's preferred game? How many bear hunters hate a trashy dog that runs cat or coon? Give it to an "off game" hunter. No papers unless they pan out. Give young dog every chance. Don't charge them papers after they train them .. be happy you gave him/her another chance.
Just my opinion...

Great point. Also have seen one mans cull be another mans champion.

I have a hog hunter that gets all of my culls, most make pretty good hog dogs.

I agree! Once worked a young dog that had no tree at all. She made a fantatic fox hound that lead the pack. Here we can try them on deer, bear, and cats.

.

Been doing that for 50 years. I know several dogs that didn't work out on coon but we have hunters down here that hunt a lot of different game. Several have made good bear dogs, several have made good deer dogs and some good hog dogs. There are a multiple of things a dog can do and some just don't do well on coon. Also like you said. Some just have bad faults and don't do good on anything.

I had one out of a World Champion many years ago that just would not look up. My Buddy was just waiting for me to cull him and put him in his deer hound pack. He worked out perfect for that. I have seen them out of Hardwood Swamp, Houses Hank, Hardwood Dan and several other well know hounds. Make outstanding deer hounds when they fell short on coon. Thing is when your buddies get one from you and they do good for them. They will bug you to death wanting another cull. LOL

About ten years ago I had a young male that was stone cold silent on coon. He would never open his mouth until he treed. But he would bark every breath on off game and was super fast on track. I never knew how fast he was because he didn't open and this was before Garmin's. I sold him to a bear hunter and he made one of the top bear dogs in North Carolina. He still calls me every year to ask if I have any more culls.
