The component in chocolate that is harmful is theobromine. Theobromine poisoning in black bear cubs and raccoons has been documented in Michigan and Pennsylvania.
This resulted from large amounts of chocolate used in bear baits, and as one might suspect it is more evident in young animals.
The one thing to remember about poisons is the dose matters. Very good examples are alcohol and Tylenol. Both are technically poisons, but by reducing the dose both can be consumed by humans. If your liver is already compromised alcohol's and Tylenol use can contribute to death.
