Proposal 2 - Tree Countdown

2. Tree Countdown.

• Option A: One minute after first dog is declared treed, second tree (75) position is closed on that tree but dog is eligible for next available tree points (50); two minutes after first dog is declared treed, third tree (50) position is closed on that tree. Any dog(s) declared treed on that tree after two minutes has passed will be assigned 25 tree points.

• Option B: Any dog that is declared treed two minutes after first dog was declared treed; will be assigned 25 tree points on that tree.

2019 UKC RULE PROPOSAL CLARIFICATIONS AND NOTES
Be advised, the following notes are the opinions/statements of those who submitted the proposals and may or may not necessarily reflect the opinion of UKC.

PROPOSAL 2 (A). No statement.

PROPOSAL 2 (B): Both second (75) and third (50) are available provided these positions are taken within the first two minutes of the first dog being declared treed. Otherwise, after two minutes the only position available for any dog declared treed will be last (25).
*This exact rule has been used in UKC Super Slams and was widely accepted by hunters and judges. It is easy to implement and is unique to UKC. Dogs may cover up to two minutes like always. Dogs that are over two minutes after the first arriving at a tree were most likely not running the track and are simply “covering” the dog(s) that put the work in. This change also keeps the first dog treed the most accountable in the case of a slick or off game in a registered cast.

I'd rather see the tree closed after 3 minutes than a countdown.

Its the same in another Kc, talk about no room for old men. Your walking from one tree to the next all night, you never stop.

70% voted for a countdown. Dead heat right now, when it comes to A or B. Interesting.

2-3 dogs leave out on some trash, dog slips over by hisself doing the right thing and trees a coon. Dogs quit running trash and cover 4 mins after dog trees a coon. Dog that did all the work and did it right still loses. You gonna reward the dogs that did nothing right?

Let’s worry more about rewarding dogs for actually treeing a coon and not worry about basing the rules off of s slick tree.

The rules already favor a first tree dog by awarding them 50 points more than the second dog to tree.
If the push to change for a count down persists because the other KC's do it that way, then at least have the sense to tweak the rule change to also change first tree to 100 points LIKE THE OTHER KC's.
In this way even on a count down second dog treed after one minute is still only 50 behind first dog treed.
Second thought..Yes do it. It will give the better track dog more of a chance to beat that deep and lonely tree dog.

There’s not much difference in option A and B, other than in option B 75 tree points are open longer. Basically the same rule.

I'm going to say this about all these Rule changes and take this as you will!! UKC hunts has always been a coonhunters sport. Anyone and everyone could hunt in it. No membership at the every weekend Poor Boy hunt the Ave dog could win. Now think of this.. Johnies been a member of the local club for many years and has showed up to every meeting, donated his time for every event, guided for every hunt, and judged many casts. Now Johnie has never hunted a dog that ever met ave. But once a year or once in awhile Johnie wins a cast and Ol Blue looks like a winner. We change the rules to make it harder for Johnie to compete and Johnie gets beat and beat every night. Sooner then later Johnie quits the Hunts the Club and the sport!! What did you really gain with the Pro Hunt rule changes? I would say 60% or more people that hunt UKC hunts are Johnies!! If you and your dog are threatened by the Johnies in this world of Coonhunters maybe you and Johnie have more in common then you think!!

Tree count down

Leave it like it is or ukc should merge with pkc because they are going to loose a lot of hunters.

X 2. Ukc has used it in the past Super Slams it was successful. Hunters liked it, judges liked it and it's easy to use and implement. This change would also be unique to UKC not a copy of any kennel club. It holds the first dog treed the most accountable as far as points go. And doesn't offer much for the mediocre track dog or the genuine metooers, if they come in later on a slick they won't take as much minus but on a coon not as much plus. I suspect that who would be most apposed to this change are hunting the automatic strike packing (but not quick enough lol) dog. Don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

As for the comment about losing hunters I strongly disagree. It is a change that has been asked for by many for years.

I think dogs should have 3 minutes to cover for 2nd and 3rd position, and then all dogs treed after 3 minutes tree in for 25.

That (I believe) gives a dog that thinks for himself one extra minute to decide if they feel comfortable backing the dog(s) that got treed ahead of it.

Lets split the difference. Many folks have tried to pass this close the tree thing after 2 minutes for several years and it always seems to fail. Lets offer up something a little different and see if this compromise will work.

Just my two cents

Only 288 voters but it looks like 74% of the interweb coonhunters want a countdown. I wonder how many hunters have called their breed rep? Will this be a case of "the squeaky wheel gets the grease"?
