I think pups mature at different levels,when you got a pup that all it wants to do at the tree is play with the dog that’s treeing, there not ready to start training?
What’s your thoughts?

I kept 4 from a litter...... 8 mths old ..... 3 males : 1 female.... 2 males r running & treeing even split treeing at least once per nite.
The other 2 just wanna play.....
So yea pups mature at different speeds.

Even different strains of the same breed can mature at different ages...even pups in the same litter but not as often from what I've seen...
I have expectations for pups...they need to be on a progressive upward curve as they get older starting at a young age...it's exciting for me when I see pups exceeding expectations...

Some basic or general information I've came to the conclusion of.....
females mature faster than males, females are normally mature by 15 - 18 months old. Males are around the 20 - 26 months. I prefer females but not for this reason. Females tend to be hard headed. Not all the males have been soft but just don't take a correction the same way.

One of the biggest mistakes i feel I have made over the years is putting an expectation on what I think a pup should be doing at a certain age. I push it when its not ready, get frustrated with it, and give up on it, when maybe it just wan't ready to begin with.

You gotta have some limit or you will have a bunch of 3 year old losers but you can see when they are ready and when they aren't. I only have 2 dogs now, a 10 year old and a 6 month old. When the 10 year old was 6 months old you could not keep her home, she would take herself hunting and was running and treeing by herself at 8 months old. A total hunting machine, loved it more then life, and for her going hunting was "playing".

The young one I have now has no interest in even leaving the yard. My guess is if I left her loose all day and night she would travel less then 200 yards from the kennel building, she is completely not ready. FORGET NUMBERS. Do what the dog tells you to do and if its not ready don't be afraid to wait til its a little older. Good luck.

I dont start mine till at least 7 months old, let them be pups..
What's the hurry. Our Litter we had one Male started late little ove 2 years old, when his lights come on it was on.
And very accurate lives to be alone, just made nitech and place 5th
On Friday at grand American. First and first on 2 coon Own by Tommy Lanning, Tommy was about to give up on him till one night it all came together.
Texas is a brother to Radar witch is Tommy's dog started at 7 months old, doing it on his own,
Give them pups a chance to grow up and have a little patience.
It sometimes worth the wait.
