What's Everyone's Opinion On Cross Bred Dogs?

Just picked up some pups tonight out of ntch walker female a buddy owns that got bred by a ntch. Male redtick. Think they are gonna be great dogs. Well bred parents. Probably gonna only keep one. He sold me all 4. What's your guys opinion on these?

Cross breed or x breed can be a good thing if used correctly but an accidental breeding is just that an accidental breeding and not thought but into it, but sometimes accidental breeding can make history, good luck with your pups.

Cross bred

One day you might be saying...that cross bred hound I bought as a pup was the best coon dog I ever owned...

Good luck with them and keep us updated on their progress...

My Crossbreds are very gamey extra trashy depression era sportsmen hounds extra on the trashy side and by golly I love hunting them , easy to train they become your friends and they know what come here means and NO health problem at all. It is not so much about the cross has it is what hunting lines they come from. JMHO and S/FI!

The potential for instant hybrid vigor is a plus...and the absolutely best dog I ever owned was a crossbred...

I only bred him once because he was x-bred but bred one of his sons quite a few times...

I've got several cross breeds.....Plott X Mt. Cur and I really like them. The two that I have finished were born here and ended up being given back to me. I straightened them out by shooting out every possum they treed, then they started treeing coons. I guess they are depression era trashy.

they will reproduce there likeness just like a purebred but only when breeding for like traits and desired abilities. Dogs with health issues or prone to them IMHO need not be bred regardless of hunting style or ability. But to each his own.

I hunted with several x bred dogs years ago. They was called English. Ohio river chunk, Mack's ol bang just to name a couple. That line was off a son of bozo and a mediocre at best bluetick bitch. But it worked. You'll have just a good of chance with xbred as any other coonhound.

X bred and leapard curs switching to hound by name was my cue to walk away.

Crosses of walker, English, and bluetick didn't bother me so much, as 30-40 years ago pedigrees existed with common dogs shared by all 3. We're only 60-70 since the split.

The rest amounted to a castrated or spaded dog. No matter how good the first generation is it's a dead end.

I am on 4 generations of DEAD ENDS then PM your number and I'll show you an 11 month and 16 month old dead end treed all by their lonesome. And next fall I will make gen # 5 crossbred cross and they are all related. with only 2 out crosses , 1 to a Plott and the other was to another dead end cross bred.

Is an X-bred considered a hybrid?

2 dogs bred together of any breed dont make it a hybrid. Since all dogs decend from wolves they claim, they are just a mix breed then.

hybrids are animals of the same "family" being bred, such as a wolf and a dog. or a donkey and a horse. they are sometime infertile- such as a mule. different breeds being bred together makes a cross bred.

Cross bred dogs

When I was a young man, all we had in these mountains were cross bred hounds and curs. Registered dogs were rare as hens teeth, bluetick, Red bone, b & t, English, etc were crossed regularly with each other. Coon dog to coon dog, some of those cross bred grade dogs reproduced good dogs in every litter some crosses were good, but did not reproduce as good as they were. Just like today, some of these crosses are turning out very good and some not so good. No different than the registered crosses, some are good, others not so good. I was glad to see the Registries accept the crossbreeds and allow them to compete in the hunts. Dave

Someone already answered your question...

Heterosis - hybrid vigor - is the_reversal_of the loss of vigor that defines inbreeding depression as a result of an increase in genetic heterozygosity.

Inbreeding depression is caused by too much inbreeding...usually you will see smaller litters and smaller dogs...lowered fertility amongst other things...and a first out cross to a different strain or breed and you will see hybrid vigor which fixes inbreeding depression...back in the old days the old timers called inbreeding depression "tired blood"...back in the 1970 and 1980s I had friends that wouldn't breed any related dogs because many folks back then thought dogs would be born deformed and dumb etc if bred that way...linebreeding and inbreeding was already happening and I chose that route and it worked great for me...

Me too. Even though they have no way to have breed standards to show I do wish they allowed them to compete within hunt races. Aka Purina.

Reuben, if I bred two registered blueticks that had no common ancestors for 40 generations, would the pups be hybrids?
