I have a almost 3 year old dog that I have had since a pup. I didn't give him the woods time he needed from one till two years old. He never got any bad habits and I was quick to correct the trash running. Towards the end of summer this year I really poured the hunting to him. A lot of quick trips to the woods and always ended on a good note. I never pressured him to get him goining till he was ready. I've only hunted him with other dogs maybe two or three times. Up until season opened in ohio I've only shot two or three coon to him. When he would tree I would get into the tree as quick as possible then make the time a little longer each time. This season I have been hunting for to five nights a week. In the past couple weeks he will run a track let out two big locates and chop. By the sounds of it you know hes right. But as soon as I get 100 to 80 yards away he will pull off, run the same track and tree an empty or a den. I am scratching my head on this one. It's like he has back tracked a year. Has any ran into this issue?

Only thing that I can say that could help is put on your running shoes if you must. He is or already started a bad habit and your not doing your part.

I had one that was doing the same thing. the dog had had several coons shot out to her that were still very much alive and got her chewed up. she would tree the coon but when she saw I was coming she would stop treeing and leave I believe because she did not want to fight the coon. Don't know if you have a garmin or not but the only way I got her straightened out was to mark her location on the garmin when she treed. and when she would leave I walk directly to the tree, hit the tone button and make her come back to me then tie her to the tree. After doing this 2 or 3 times and shooting the coon out DEAD. she began to catch on and would not leave. don't know if this will help you but it fixed my problem

I have never had a problem with them being to live for him. I've always shot them out dead. I am almost wondering if he is running squirrel. He runs logs and trees a lot and I mean a lot of dens! It seems like he goes from coon to squirrel back to coon. I have broke him from deer and opossum but never thought about squirrels till I watched him run a track.
