To squall or not to squall

I hear a lot of guys say that they don't squall at the trees because if a dogs slick it will make the dogs get worse. Here in the Deep South our trees are already thick with leaves and if a Coon doesn't look your SOL without squalling. What are your guys thoughts?

You have to learn to watch a pup, if it fires the pup up then no, I wouldn't do it. If they are indifferent to it then its not a big deal. If I was a guy that didn't have enough dog savvy to know the difference it's probably a good rule to just not ever do it. Most faults a dog has are in one way or another created by who ever handled and trained them.

I've never understood why some folks walk in and blow the reeds out of their squallers on plainly slick trees. Kinda like Michael said above, handlers gotta have a little more sense than what they're handling...

Honestly if you squall on every tree regardless if you think its slick, it will condition the dog to you blowing a squaller. And I know a few guys including myself that will blow a squaller on a bunch of trees. Gets them used to it for the hunts too. I haven't seen a dog that you couldn't condition after a couple weeks of hard hunting.

once you have handled a dog on a slick tree you have already reinforced bad behavior .tying one up on a slick tree while you look for the coon is why sending them on seldom works on curing the slick treeing dog . just a few times at being handled slick is all it takes to ruin a young hound .

I don't care if it's an old dog or a pup. Squall and make sure the tree is slick before you correct the dog. Who wants to correct a dog only to find a coon after the fact?? Especially a leafy tree. You correct the dog in the right way, it won't matter if you squalled or not.

I tie dogs on all trees. If the dog is corrected the right way it won't matter. Not tying dogs will start bad habits

I'm trying to understand this squalling thing. If a dog slick trees squalling makes him tree more for no reason. But if one won't tree no amount of squalling will make him tree. HMMMM

i have very little use for one. i won't use 1 till i find the coon if i am training. like jim said ya need to know your pup.
i know some fellows that blow them at every tree. i have watched them train pup after pup of slick treer's. maybe there is more issues as well but never understood why anyone would cause these issues for there self.

i have seen dogs corrected for slick treeing only to step back take a second look and find the coon. it didn't ruin the dog at all. now i have seen dogs not corrected on slicks that i felt it just ruined them or at least i had no desire to own them.
