I totally agree with you...
I have chewed on this for over 20 years... I owned Durango who was Rooster's half brother. They were both out of Raffle's Billie Jo who was out of Bingo... We were trying to stud him out at the same time Rooster.
You may feel that Nick was overlooked, but I watched everyone go to Rooster while my hound ended up producing 73 pups.
Yes, I know who Nick was out of.. he was the only pup in the litter and I was the SECOND person to hold him. He was born in my best friends kennel. He was born on Dec. 26. and we were all shocked that for the second litter in a row Blue Magic Gold had only 1 pup.
The first time she was bred to Bingo she only had one pup... and after waiting for several hours we loaded her up in my truck and headed to the vet.. an ultra sound revealed that Gold only had the one pup. I looked and Johnny and said, "well, your LUCKY you got one". The name stuck. ( and his favorite song happened to be , man I feel lucky tonight.)
Dennis Brought JO Jo over to my local club quite often. I hunted with her a LOT... drew her a lot... I also drew the DEETER dog several times. HE was one of my favorite dogs... nice looking and had a nice mouth.
Now I don't know exactly when Rooster was sold the last time , but I do remember him being studded out after I quit trying to stud Durango. Morris had him and ran some adds on him after Paul Taylor and Wyatt Wright.
I drew Rooster at English Days in 95 and it was after that when he became famous. Winning English Days was the beginning of the Wyatt Wright era and the end of the Paul Taylor era.
There is no doubt that JO JO and Nick crossed well.... I always told Dennis that Jo JO could be bred to a bicycle and produce a coondog. She was one of a kind. We have a video of her treeing behind the house with all the Timber Valley females... I still drive by that tree and smile.
I think the fab 5 is still talked about because it is very uncommon that every pup in a litter makes dual grand, and not because it was better than any other cross. Those pups just got into the hands of guys who worked TOGETHER to make it happen.
