Bug Spray and Your Hunting Equipment

This is something I just read and thought I would share.

"It’s early evening: You’re working in the garage and swarms of tiny bugs are feasting upon your flesh. You grab the bug spray, coat your entire body, and cackle something like, “Come and get me now!” Only when you wake up in the morning, you’re no longer laughing: The car’s paintwork is destroyed — the bug spray effectively melted the clear coat.

How do I know this? It happened just the other day to my neighbor, Mo Almalag, a professor at Indiana University. And after hearing his story, I went onto the Internet and discovered lots of unlucky people posting about the same issue. Apparently the DEET used in bug spray is known to melt car paint."

Bug spray would melt the varnish on a gun stock before they put deet in it.

I get lights in sometimes that the box looks like its melting. It damages switches and really cuts down on the brightness of a light when it gets on the lens. It ruined the face of my iron man watch I use in the hunts also. In short, dont spray your light with bug spray.

.

I know there are modern sprays out there but I cut my teeth on Musk Oil. About 99% feet. Will keep the bugs off but destroy anything it touches. Including the person if they use to much or put it all over a youngster.
Probably 25 years ago I purchased a brand new Ruger 10/22. My buddy had just rubbed down in musk oil and I hand him my rifle while I put some on. Where the grabbed the gun around the stock it took all of the finish off and destroyed the looks of the gun for life. Before it was every fired. Deet is some bad stuff but works. Please use caution around kids. Actually for a while the amount of deet went way down and I thought that was do to federal regulations but I see it rising again. I am not experienced with any of the smell good sprays and I am sure some work. When I but a spray I look for the % of deet and the more the better it works. Just don't touch nothing or spray it on anything you like.

Richard you serious about that. I have tried several things on my wife's car and nothing has worked. Now I can either be a Hero around here and do what Richard recommends or be a Zero and do what Richard recommends and damage them further.

Not that I don't trust you but I think I will try a small spot first. thanks!

Yes, Richard is correct. Deepwoods Off does the trick. I spray it on a blue shop towel and rub it on. Takes oxidation right off. Guy in Indiana told me and Richard that at autumn oaks last year and we all tried it at southern red days this year and sure enough it worked. Give it a try Bruce

Years ago an older hunter tipped me off on using dryer sheets instead of spray for mosquitos. He suggested to simply place the sheet on top of your bump cap under the light chord. I tried it and found it to work great!

......until several weeks later when my light started shorting out. Those chemicals in those dryer sheets actually ate through the chord.

Mr Gingrich, you are supposed to put the dryer sheet under or in your helmet. That reminds me of the guy that complained to the doc about how hard it was to swallow a suppository.
Oh my goodness, I got something right. Where is HOBO? I can't believe that y'all would even doubt something I said.

I hate using the stuff but it's either use it or stay home here. You can't hardly breath, it's not just hunting you can't even go out in the yard for more than a few minuets in the evenings.

Allen, I tried the drier sheet thing. It kept them away from my face but these misquotes will bite you through your cloths. Arkansas rice fields are not anything like an Indiana corn field.

The EPA says it is not classifiable as a human carcinogen.

Enough water in the lungs will kill you, drink enough water and the kidneys will shut down. Moderation is the key. I wouldn't drink deet and only use it when necessary.

Place it under my helmet and risk going bald? Have you lost your mind?!!!

Joey, if we spend too much time in a cornfield we probably aren't treeing many coons. We have plenty of swamp and other skeeter attractants in yankee-land. Plus our skeeters are the size of bumble bees. Those little southern skeeters are harmless, aren't they?

I've heard it said in some of the northern states, "the state bird is a mosquito."

I seen one the other day out of the corner of my eye land on my shoulder. Slapped and left a blood spot dang near the size of quarter. I was in Alaska working and the only place I ever seen them as bad as they were there was a place just south of me called the wabasika skatters. I tried deer hunting the skatters once. Only deer I seen was submerged in the water all but it's eyes and nose trying to get out of them. I lasted about 30 minuets after the sun come up. Everyone was setting up camp when we got there early that morning. When I came out they were all packing up! I hate the things.

Big Bad Mosquito

Let me tell you how big and bad they are in the bottoms. We went hunting one night in the bottoms and when we got out of the truck and was getting ready, I overheard two Mosquito's talking as the flew over. Mosquito #1 said, "hurry up and let's get the little one and get out of here." And Mosquito #2 said, "what's the hurry?" Mosquito #1 answered, "If the big ones see what we're doing, they might come take him from us!!" HAHAHAHA.......I couldn't help myself. But seriously, we got to do what we can to protect ourselves. Stay safe guys and gals.

Some good information in the link below.

I just use the Permethrin that's listed in the link on my clothes, seems to do a good job for me, and of course mosquitos are everywhere but I'm sure I don't hunt where they are near as bad as some places.

Never did like Deet products but according to this link it should be perfectly safe. There's a couple alternative products listed as well.
