Is this dog doing this when being hunted alone??? Or is it with other dogs??? Either way, if the dog will still hang the wrong tree when hunted with others one thing you might try is to tie this one at whatever wrong tree it trees on. Go to the other dogs at the correct tree and give the coon to them. Don't let the dog in on it at all and pay it no mind.
Sometimes letting this dog see what it is missing might make it think about getting to the correct tree.
No guarantees, and it might help, might not...anything is worth a try. I will say that it is worse when the dog actually is finding and running coons but still grabbing the wrong tree. Often dogs are not running a coon at all, but you are seeing the coon up close by so it don't sound like this dog is running junk.
Once or twice wont do it, you will need to try this several times and see if there is improvement. How often do you hunt this dog??? One other thing to try is leave it home for a week or two while you go hunt other dogs. I would say that after trying both of these things, not hunting as much and definitely not paying any attention to the dog at all on a slick tree if this dog still is doing this after a couple months then it is time for the last resort...whip the dog off the slick tree. It has no business there and the coon track cannot take the dog to the wrong tree. If that don't do it....time for a different dog.
In it's simplest form, there are four main reasons a dog will tree slick...they are jealous of other dogs and try to mislead them away from the prize, they are running off game and are trying to avoid a butt whuppin', they are coon and/or gun shy or they are just a slap idiot that is never going to make it. Either one is tough to fix for sure. I don't know how old you are, but when I get one that slicks I start looking for someone that wants a free pet.
Edit: One thing I hear often in regards to slick treeing and I don't agree is the excuse that "the dog is still young yet...." Maybe once or twice, maybe even three times okay, but then I say this, if that dog has the present ability to go out, find the likely place for a coon, strike a coon track, run it thru the stream, across the water, up the bank, over a fallen log, under a bunch of brambles and 100 yards later tree on the wrong tree 30 feet away from where sits the coon......then there is zero excuse for not getting the right tree.
