I have coonhunted for about 20 years now and I have never, not one single time, ever saw a dog catch a coon on the ground. Ive got a dog now about 22 months old ( raised him from a pup ) and he has caught 2 coons in the last couple months. Totally wild coons. No feeders. Below average coon population. Same type places I have hunted for years and years. He is turning out to be a very very good track dog. Do yall think this is a HUGE coincidence or will I possibly have the best track dog I have ever owned in my life ? Also both times he caught them was on a full moon. Historically over the last 20 years my coon hunting has been 90 % unsuccessful on full moon nights. Regardless of the dog. Also , the dog is naturally straight off deer or possums.

Well Jason, in my opinion, this is going to be a very good dog for you. I know nothing about your dog, but since I have seen hundreds of coon run down, I can imagine some of your dogs traits. I'm just guessing it runs a track fast with its head up and is fairly tight-mouthed on track.

I don't want to sound like I am bashing your hounds of the past, but did you have a lot of babblers? If you've been hunting for 20 years and have never had a ground catch, I'm thinking the line you were running did a lot of babbling, and worked very slowly. Just a guess, and like I said not a knock to your dogs.

I'm sure the usual bunch of windbags will chime in shortly and babble on about too much track and not enough tree, but depending on how you hunt, I think you will be very pleased. Run-to-catch dogs, are very determined, and all heart. Be happy that you have that dog, and ignore anyone else that tells you differently.

Sounds to me like you have a very good track dog in the makings.
Just curious is he tight mouthed, because sometimes this will make them get even tighter.
I had a heavy House bred male and he caught more coons on the ground than any hound I have ever been around,
He was out of Mac's Screaming Lawyer x Daughter of House's Cruze,he was tight mouthed at times, he would open the instant he smelled a coon, then just enough to let you know where he went, he could drive a track!

Thank you. I have owned fast track dogs before and neither babbled at all. Prowler ( my current dog) is fully open on track. Bawls. The first coon he caught, he ran it 430 yards and never opened till he had it bayed up. The second one, ( maybe a week ago) he ran it 700 yards and opened the whole way. Normally hes open on track but he don't just babble cause you turned him loose. Im excited about him. Hes twice the track dog he was a year ago !!!!

I have a old dog that used to catch a lot of coon on the ground his mom is out of lookin up Jeb and banjo stylish babe it's prolly similar cross to what I see is in your dogs ped twice I'm curious about that cross now ive been trying to find a replacement for him since he was two now he is 10 and haven't found one yet

Jason that's what many of us tried to tell you years ago LOL.

A fast track dog will run a coon as fast as some dogs run a deer and they will catch coon on the ground if they are too stupid to climb. When you have a truly fast track dog they will catch them on the ground regularly.

People that haven't had a fast track dog will never believe it until they see one or own one and they are not common. They spoil you.

hope the dog keeps up the good work. dogs that run to catch are a blast to hunt. they dont run to bark, track, tree, tour the country... run to eat a coon period. in the process most track and tree amazing and dont babble or bark at trees. mike and joey both said what ive experienced. i dont call it tight mouthed anymore though, just honest mouthed. keep us posted on the dog, love hearing about this kind.

In my neck of the woods during this time of the year I dont think its all about a fast track dog,I think during the rutt evidently some coons arent thinking with their brain....I know a fast track dog when I see one and in the past I have had some dogs that....were not... what I consider exceptionally fast at running a track and these dogs have caught several coon on the ground during this same period of time ,I have seen the same thing happen this time of the year with friends dogs that I know had colder noses than my walkers but were slow trailers .......RUTTING SEASON SOME WILL RUN LIKE A DEER AND I GUESS SOME WOULD RATHER FIGHT ...jmo

My black dogs will catch 1 or 2 a year (not counting if they grab one thats been run into a ground hole or culvert or kittens). It always seems to be late summer or early fall, and I tend to think the coon decides it going to stand its ground, cause these dogs aren't tight mouthed or speed demons. Coon knows it's got a dog coming behind it.

Last few caught--Caught one once at the base of a tree, there was 2 more coon up that tree. Caught another in a bean field mid summer, I figured he thought he was safe in all the cover. Caught one in a wheat field, cover again.

Can't say they've caught one this time of year.

Quit often --I have a lot of coons that go in holes, culverts or undercut creek banks but I consider those coons stoped (treed)

And when kittens are out they catch them too.

See I ain't talking about that. I am talking about open mouthed dogs fast enough to run them down in corn fields, open woods, creek beds. Where ever and when ever they will climb or die.

The fastest dog I ever owned caught three in one night once, one in the creek, one in a corn field and one on the side of the mountain. She ran with her head up and tried to catch everything she ran. She would catch one or two a month year round, sometimes more, sometimes less but was pretty consistent about it. Caught two on one cast at Autumn Oaks one night as well, both in big corn fields and was so far in front of the other dogs they didn't even get to help her kill them.

I have never had another one like her but that kind of speed spoils ya. I am still looking for it. What I have now is far from slow and will catch a few a year, but not like she did. I have had some others that were close to her speed but not quite. I ain't holdin my breath.

A lot of dogs can get close enough to Catch but don't have the nuts to grab it when it's fighting back. They'll just bay it til it climbs.

Over the years we have caught quiet a few on the ground. Generally the dogs will blow up then get quiet and stay put after they have dispatched the the coon. It's not a routine event by any means but it does happen often enough we can recognize what is happening. However, we hunt curs and thats a little different field of play. Not nearly as aggressive in track and tree as the hounds.

Mine ran one several hundred yards and out half way across white river. The river is big enough that barges go up it. He caught in the middle and brought it back to the bank to kill it. It's a wonder it didn't drowned him.

Last night 2 of my potlickers cold trailed one for 45 minutes then ran him hard for 30 minutes in flooded timber, water was about ankle deep on me, then lined him out for the river caught him on the high edge of riverbank. dogs were never more than 1/2 mile from me the whole hunt. From January till late March my trashy dogs usually catch one a week on the ground. Everyone has been a boar so far. I really love hunting dogs that run to catch as long has they open on track. Don't get me wrong I love a good tree dog as long has he or she is a good honest track dog as well.

I had one if he didn't catch a 100 coon on the ground he didn't catch one. He cought so many I would even go to him when he was fighting one. He would go tree another one after a couple of minutes. He cought three separate coons on the ground in one cast at walker day. Enjoy your dog they get old quick.
