The thing I have noticed a lot of us older hunters when breeding our dogs study the pedigree and the traits of the ansesters before we do it. The younger ones tend to just what I call breed blind they don't care what ansesters are there the just want puppy's do you think one way is just as good as the other ?

I agree with you but in a different way. I hunt the type of dogs the pedigree says they will be. Then I breed the best of them and don't have to worry about the pedigree. I saw it and the results of it in the dogs I hunt long before the breeding.

Yadkintar! you finally came up with something!! I knew you could/would do it!! after a good nites sleep!! But I for one don't breed for peds!! I breed exclusively for natural abilits the sire and dam possess!! if the ped is there it just adds a little more cream to the pot if not and I get the ability that iam looking for than that's fine!! pedigrees help to a point!! But with out the ability for a dog to reproduce natural ability!! no kind of a pedigree is gonna help!! regardless how good they are!!! male or female!!pedigrees only help sell mostly!!!if that's what your into!! notice the adds when some one is selling!! they will give details on how well they are breed!! not my cup tea!! with out reproducing ability!!jmo

Some of you old fogies look at them papers so hard you forget to put an actual coon dog together.

When someone tells me this dog goes back to ol ****** this many times....... I immediately know its a POS

If you are looking for that pup with the tools to win a World Hunt, it wont matter how you breed it, the hardest part for hunters to accept is that you will cull 9 of every 10.
You spend months developing a pup only to realize it is just a nice coondog, nothing better than that and that is not your goal. So you have to start over, cull a few more before you find a keeper and try it all again.
This is why the guys that win the most are buying them, not building them.

Jim that's why I always say it's a long time between good ones for me but I get just as much enjoyment out of training a good one as winning a hunt need some one with younger legs to do the winning part.

Jim, you wrote a mouthful there. I couldn't agree more. I think the bottom line is, you just have to do it. Do it honestly and with your mind and heart in the game. Learn from your mistakes and remember there is a place for them.

Breed for Traits, cull, breed for traits, cull, you will slowly work the junk out, that's how those Ole timers did it
If you don't like most everything about one, you should not breed it. If you don't know whats in that pedigree your just rolling the dice! Because very few reproduce in there likeness, and your getting whats behind them also

Pedigrees alone only offer a tiny bit of knowledge. Family knowledge is much more powerful when planning crosses. It takes years of experience to gain family knowledge.

Jim and I have had this conversation before ... what is wrong with a nice coon dog???????

I do not understand this need for a World Champion. I am more than happy when I have many more good hunts than bad. If a dog has provided years of good memories, that is the ultimate accolade for me.

Success is measured differently by every one. I can accept that, but this idea that you are not successful unless you reproduce or train a World Champion is a bit excessive.

But then you get a whamy Ike I got were you have bred several generations of good dogs and I bred a female back to her grandpa the whole litter ain't worth a quarter I culled mine but had crossed on bone the litter before and it clicked so that's my next move trial and error you just don't ever know.
