No, I have only hunted with 1 that actually treed a real live coon, and that's no lie. Not saying there's no good ones, just haven't ran across them yet.

Harron's Ace is as nice a dog as you can hunt with.

Gary Tom Beaty's blue ghost dog is another nice one.

I hunted Walkers for 50 years and had some pretty nice ones. Three years ago I went with some fellows hunting a blue tick. Dual GR. CH. Gayle's Gray's Creek Case. I've never seen a more impressive coon hound. He moves every track he strikes and you see a large percentage of the coons he strikes. My friend has a 2 year old out of him that's just about like him. I'm hunting a 10 month old pup out of him that's treed 7 coons alone. Most folks that say they never hunted with a good blue tick, just haven't hunted with very many, if any.

I've hunted with thousands of walkers. I have hunted with 5-10 good ones. I've hunted with probably 100 bluticks. Hunted with one or two good ones.

This is like asking a Ford guy if he has road in a nice Chevy or a Dodge guy if he has road in a good Ford.

thanks

Thanks to all of you that replied, was just wanting to see what you guys thought of todays blues. back in my day the walkers seemed long on track short on tree. yes I hunted with nice dogs all colors but just generally the rule. but blue dogs seemed to move a track slow if it was a bad track. slow yes sometimes all night for 500 yds. I have heard walkers tree good know and some blue dogs can flat move. not asking any one to buy a ford dodge or chevy just wanting to see if anyone would say something nice about one today. thanks again for the replies just like reading different thoughts.

Mr. Blue it is all about the man behind the dog. The guys that demand a good dog have them in all colors. Nate and novicane gave some good answers.
The unfortunate thing is when I searched for a good red one or a good black one they operated a lot like the good walkers I have seen. So I asked myself, why make the search so hard and just stick to walkers.

I know some guys that have some good solid blue dogs and Black and Tans they hunt them with the goals to have a dog ready to go to their different breed reunions they spend a week or so up there and their dogs get exposure that way most like that environment better more family orientated I don't blame them good food , fellowship , plenty of good dogs.

I hunt Blue's, always have probably always will. I have had some of all the breeds etc but the blues have always been my main breed. There's good & bad in all of them. A lot of it depends on the trainer & of course genetics. I think the blues as a breed have just stayed closer to their original lines with colder noses etc & hasn't been tweaked as much as the other breeds for the comp hunts in my opinion.
The 2 males I have right now are totally different in styles & breeding but both are excellent hounds. 1 weighs 110 lbs, huge bawl mouth, super cold nose, takes whatever track he hits first & sticks with it.
The other weighs 72 lbs, bawl mouth, good nose, pushes track super fast etc.
The big one takes longer on track cause he sticks his nose in every step of the track. The smaller one can run with its head up.
During a drought like we had last summer that ole big cold nose could get a track started when others couldn't.
Also for some reason I think Bluetick people as a whole are more into pleasure hunting. I've hunted with a bunch of us dogs that were excellent but never comp hunted.

Very true statement. What else should be said is for an "off color" dog ( not a walker), you'll spend 2-3 times as much on one buying it. Which is why I did switch to walkers. I still like blue's, and still own 1. But for me, I like to competition hunt and pleasure hunt. I like certain traits of both breeds. But it makes more financial sense to just hunt walkers. iMO

If I'm doing the math correctly, the percentage is better on the blue ticks.

I'm not saying the blue tick breed is better by no means. We carried one blue tick that we owned to 2 pro hunts and made the final 4 of one time and split the money. The walker breed has the same problem the rest of the breeds do. When you look under puppies for sale under the walker section in ukc right now I will guarantee there is probably not one cross on there that both sire and dam would suite me. No offense to walker people but most that hunt them are happy with what I call mediocrity.

I agree Nat there is a problem with making so many breedings with mediocre at best dogs but if you look at your post before there is also another problem and that is in turn why so many unworthy bitches and sires are bred to. You say out of thousands of walkers youve been with youve only hunted with 5- 10 that were up to your standards. When there is only 5 dogs in the biggest breed of coonhounds there is then it makes it especially rare to see two of those five get bred together. Anything less than that wouldnt be making a cross where both sire and Dam suited you unless you considered looking outside of that breed and then you may have a few more options than the 5-10. How is one suppose to raise or buy a potential pup with the hopes of it making a top hound when there are only a handful of dogs in each breed that are worthy to breed to. I think there are a few out there that are doing there best to make good crosses and shooting for something better than what they have but with only a handful of sure nuff good ones in each breed it is hard to blame folks that are breeding what you consider mediocre hounds, to me looks like they dont have much of a choice but to breed what they have in hopes to get something better than what they started with.

I too have the mindset of not wanting to raise or take a chance on a litter where the Sire and Dam did not suit me but this is extremely hard to find as you have pointed out. I like to hunt off colored dogs and have been trying to find something I like in a bluetick. I have been fortunate to get to hunt with quite a few blueticks the last 5-6 years but I am stuck in a corner trying to find two that I like and then in hopes the two get bred together. I have seen close to the same numbers you have in the blueticks.

Best bluetick I ever saw was Blue Run Gentlemen, but he wasn't a reproducer. You wont see too many pedigrees that go back to him. Everybody has their own idea of what a coon dog should be and it seems like as soon as someone gets one that does some winning people have to get jealous and talk the dog down.
In regards to "best to best" litters...no, you don't see them very often, but then again you don't always get good pups from those crosses either.
I never had much luck praying, but whether or not you get a fantastic dog is in gods hands. And you will not get him until it's your time.
