The last dog I had would get ahold of a coon and would absolutely not let go. You needed the jaws of life to get his mouth off the coon. Not a terrible problem. But it was annoying. I also read about dogs getting aggressive with people that try to take the coon away. I feel like this problem is man made in some instances. Is there any way to help prevent a dog from getting this way over coon? Or is it kind of left up to chance?

I mainly think its the dog. I have a 3 year old female that is not people or dog aggressive period over a dead coon. I have a 8 month old pup that is not aggressive in any way until the coon is dead. Once the coon is dead he is aggressive towards the other dogs over it but not towards me period. When he was a puppy I started using the command drop it and now when he has anything in his mouth whether its a coon or a tennis ball when I say drop it he drops it and steps away from it.

I have not seen one that would not drop a coon instantly when given a light shock. But I have not seen them all.

The worst one I ever had for letting go would drop that coon instantly with a light shock and no, there were no bad after effects. It was just perfectly effectively.
