Always curious with today's low fur prices how many coons the average hunter shoots out a year. I personally don't kill more than is needed for training purposes on a young dog or to reward a dog from time to time. With such low prices or any time really it has always blown my mind to hear people say they treed a double and shot both coons out. I have never seen the common sense in that from a hunting prospective. Each time you shoot one that is one less coon that will be there to tree the next time you go out.

To each their own and I understand varying coon populations around some parts of the country need coons thinned out. Just wanted to see what other hunters around the country do as well.

I can't remember the last time I shot more than one out of a tree but during kill season we kill everyone my dog trees.

We have kill season 9 months a year.l probably kill 20 a year , I tree over 20 a week.

Like Jeff said our season started in July. I have killed 5-6 coon to my young dog and caught 2 on the ground. In the last 3 hunts we treed 13 coon on the outside. Doesn't seem to matter to him if I kill them or not. I just have never enjoyed the killing of coon, but sure don't criticize those who kill more.

The number all depends on where you live or the overall number of coons where you live. And then you have to ask how many during the fall/winter and how many during spring/summer. Surely no one kills any during March-May.
I kill very few from the beginning of March-June. And only a couple a month around my house. But I/we killed 25 this last week. Of course, that was only one per tree.

Carson just texted me and said for the last 5 years he's killed over 5000 a year. Hunting the same 4 month old pup who is still 4 months old.

We need more hunters like you in this sport. Leave way more than you kill. Dead raccoons do not provide anymore sport to anyone. Conservation can and will provide us with a healthy population for years to come. Dave

Several places where I hunt, many farmers that let me hunt want me to kill several to help thin them out. But other areas it just depends.

Most farmers around me want them All dead. They let me drive around and hunt their farms so I do what they want done. Never clean a tree out but I shoot coon. And can always go back and tree more.

Season has been in a month now and I'm up to four!! I love seeing a coon sitting up a tree and my year old pup trees them but so far doesn't really want to grab one. The only reason I really have to shoot one is my friend who loves to eat them.

"Conservation" is a lot more than just not killing coons. The population of any wild species must be controlled. The amount of habitat and food must be considered along with the population. Smart hunters can do this a lot better and more efficiently than just letting nature run it's course. Just think of the food sources, the overall coon numbers and the amount/acres of woodland. If you have an overpopulation of coons, then you had better do something about it or "nature" will.
Or if a farmer is complaining about the number of coons, you had better do something about it before he brings out the poison. On the other hand, if coons are very scarce in your area then you need to leave a few of them. You might also consider increasing their food source where possible.
Now that would be good conservation and we do need more of that.

I here ya about the poison. I just heard about two separate situations just last night where deer hunters are using poison to control their food costs for deer feeders.

We got r first 2 for the season last night. Chuck said his shouders hurt so bad before he got done fleshing them, that we weren't going to shoot very many. Last yr, we only shot 8 because the 29 we got the yr before didn't sell. This yr, they all sold for an avg of $2.00 ea.

Last year's kill season I shot about 30 out of my spots and about 20 at my hunting buddies an hour north. We have lots of coon around here. I agree with Richard it all depends on ur coon population. If they were thin I wouldn't shoot many but here they are thick. Population must b kept in check to stay healthy. Mother nature and distemper can b much more devastating if they are not. I can't even sell them but absolutely refuse to leave them lay in the woods . I give them to my friends dad who is a fur buyer that has closed his doors. At least he can make a couple dollars off them n they aren't wasted. To each his own.

I never shoot coons or possums. we have very few coons here. I doubt we'll ever have a lot of coons because we don't have a big mast crop. we're bad about having late frosts and that kills a lot of mast.
if your area produces a lot of coons you have to kill them or else mother nature will.

Got some fellas down here that try every trick in the book to get others ran off an old strip mine when they kill rabbitts. Problem is is that the rabbitts are so thick they are going to kill themselves out. My hunting party kills around 100 off one 200-300 acre spot every year plus trap a few more and tonite you could light it up with a spotlight and see more than an ol country boy like me could count. All game must be managed no matter if we like hunting them or not. This is why i get aggrivated everytime i hear of a coyote killing a dog. I just wonder how many times we leave the hounds at home to go predator hilunting.

Like I stated in an earlier post. I personally kill very few coon. Just don't have an urge to and guess at my age I understand what the dog is doing and they only have to please me by the work they do from the leash to the tree. Yes I want to see a coon but if they do a sloppy job treeing it, I still am not happy. Dog work with a coon is what counts for me. I went to the feed store yesterday to get some plants for the fall garden. Young guy there wanted to borrow my dog as he can sell a few coon for a Holiday Dinner. I hope the dog don't fall in love with him as he gave him more coon than I have this year. This proves a dog does not need coon in their mouth as this dog gets very few but looks like he enjoys them. This week before last night he had treed 7 and none were shot out.
Like Joe and others mentioned. I think knocking them to for training purposes to a young dog or eating is fine. I will also never knock someone for taking what they want.
This weekend down here is DOE weekend for our deer hunting. Been encouraged all week to go hunting and have some fun. Shooting doe's is like shooting coon, just not fun for me anymore.
Think when the Sun comes up I will plant my fall garden and watch it grow. Now thats fun.
While I am planting I will look over in the dog yard and dream about the two pups there from Mongo and wonder if they will ever tree a coon.

Does are like coon. Someone needs to get out and kill them or they will eat all of the food source and you will have tiny bucks. If hunters don't control the deer population then nature will do it with disease. And natures way kills bucks and does. Regulations should require all deer hunters to kill 3 does before they can kill a buck. Hide prices or eating coon should not make a difference on how many you kill. Good conservation practices should be the controlling factor. In some areas of the country, you need to kill them even if you don't like to.

So far this year I have shot 2 coons. Last year I think I shot 9. Two years ago I shot 17. The seasons before that I only shot about 50/year. I typically tree 2-4 singles a night. The state lands I hunt get pounded pretty hard. Right now, it takes the dog 600-1200 yards to strike unless it is spot that is isolated.

Years ago, farmers up north allowed coon hunters almost complete access with no issues. Back then it wasn't unusual to fill an entire truck bed behind the dog box in one night. I remember many 20-30 coon nights. Make no mistake those nights were as much work as fun.
