Why does it cost more to hunt with a dog?

When people post a dog for sale why do a lot of times they increase the price $500-$1,000. Just to hunt with the dog before you buy it?

Does anyone have to pay more for a vehicle if they take it for a test drive before buying?

I'd stay clear of those personally. They're a gambling person. And that you'll take the dog without trying it.

Ive offered folk less than what they are asking if I buy the dog "off the chain". A lot of times they will take the offer as they are tired of all the calls, texts and tire kickers. Of course, Ive done my research on the dog before I make this offer. Buying and selling dogs is the biggest hassle there is.

many years ago a local dog trader had one for sale $500 off the chain or $750 under the tree. I heard it was a nice dog but wanted to hunt with it first. I liked the dog and offered him the $500 he turned it down because he showed the dog . I sent my cousin in the morning with $500 lol

I always figured it was a trick. List it for 1k under a tree and 700 off the chain and some people will be cheap and take a chance for 700. And probably it's not worth $200 dollars but the seller got his cash without showing it hunt. Cause if the buyer seen it hunt they would probably run away.

Sales trick to sell a garbage dog used by dog traders or low lifes

Edit-- I went to see one of these dogs that was priced higher on the tree. But I demanded we go hunting. The guy was pretty much trying everything not to have to go hunting when I showed up.. He was even lowering his off the chain price, then started with the excuses why the hunting wouldn't be good then excuses for the dog. Anyways we went hunting and the dog was garbage.

Had a dog jockey explain it to me years ago ....more times than not guy won't buy even if dog looks outstanding... The extra cash just for the aggrevation ....they want your bottom dollar cash then wanna trade junk at retail....now this ol fellow usually had a couple decent dogs if he knew you he would even sell one on payments but if you were the average shopper he was after your dollar....lol... But some its just to get you to buy off the chain and usually that dog not worth anything

Price

Sometimes it's not worth the trouble for a cheap dog. I put a green started dog on board a couple weeks ago for 600. I had 34 calls answered a ton of text and sent pictures. I don't have time right now because of sick family to show dogs so I told those they could come get him and try him and try him for a week. Some said they would some were sending dog hauler some sending deposits none showed so that's one reason to advertise cheaper off chain.

So if you go to buy a vehicle and you end up test driving it, you will pay the dealership or private party more money? B/c you understand that they too have to go through a lot of tire kickers and people saying they will be coming back to buy it and everything else you can imagine someone saying. Its all part of it when dealing with the public. I'm gonna go on a limb and say you didn't pay more than the asking price when you test drove the vehicle.

9 times out of 10 you are fixing to get screwed when anyone ask double the price on a dog to show it to you in the woods because they want you to buy off chain, Anything you try and sale is a hassle people calling and texting and wanting pictures and to meet and never show up and that is something you know you are going to deal with before you put it up for sale and no difference if it is a house or car or dog or what ever although i have never seen the price hike in any of the others for unseen or untested as it is in the dog sale game .

Steve

All I'm saying is instead of having to show a green started dog that might or might not do something on that particular night I wou much rather sell it off chain for 500 as to show it for 600.

After

Reading all post again I certainly agree if price is doubled I would smell a rat also. I didn't notice than in my first read and would never post one for sale like that.

I

Guess you can ask or try whatever one wants. I've had cheap dogs that people wanted two weeks trial on and sold several high price dogs that they never even tried. Guess it whatever you want.

True. Buyers buy. Most that try are there to go hunting. They pick dog apart and on their way. When I try a dog I am looking for every fault it has. When I buy a dog I have to find the good points. When trying buyers remorse sets in,they have to justify the purchase and then compare it to Spot of 30 years ago.

I wouldn't try a $500 dog nor a $5000 dog. My method is not right. I buy it then live with my decision and do not ask for a pity party if I get screwed.

But,in my world,I don't think you get much of a coon dog for $500-$1500. So,I don't look there. I think you get what you buy.

If you going to by a dog to win with don't by off a hard competitor. If it could win big time they would keep it.

Don't go to try a $1000 dog thinking it's going to be a $5000 dog when you get there. Those deals are very few and far between.

What always got me about buying dogs is there can be a very good local dog for sale but a guy rather drive 9 hours to get one somewhere else.

If there a good dog in your area buy it.

I don't mind showing any dog I sale. I will take less off chain usually because I don't want to hassle with meeting, going hunting, hearing about all dogs of past, dog look like a dog,or dog look good and then hear bs excuse of why he don't suit or maybe one just decided they don't need a dog. My time is worth more to me.

I have been in sales my whole life. I will always believe this statement buyers buy, lookers try

Not every time but most of the time the dog is a piece of junk and the seller knows human nature that most people are cheap. They need to remember that if you try a dog for the higher price and it is junk you have lost nothing but time, if you buy it off the chain because it's cheaper and it turns out to be worthless then you saved nothing. You lost your money and the time you spent to go get the dog.

I don't take a vehicle on a 2 week trial. But I do test drive vehicles before I buy them (some more than others depending on the price).

I just thought it was normal etiquette when selling a hunting dog that the price was the price and not more expensive to see what you are getting.

I am not complaining or anything like that just thought it would be a decent topic to discuss.

if you are honest and tell the truth about a dog. the person who drive some distance will buy the dog if he is what you say. why be scared to show your dog if you describe him honestly. if ever i sell a dog i would be proud to show him or give a trial. i have nothing to hide

Mem

I understand what you're saying but dogs and people can both make liars out of the most honest people. I sold a dog to a friend a few years ago on my word for 4k. He called in a few weeks and said dog was doing nothing like I said and I believe he was telling the truth. I took dog back and gave money back that he ask for. Sold it to another man and to this day he swears 10k won't buy him.
