Autumn Oaks Location Changed

Ok , I know this is going stir a bunch of you up.,, Esp all of you that live close to the fairgrounds .
I'm sure this topic has been brought up before but
I think UKC should change the location of Oaks every couple of years. It would def let people who wouldn’t normally go because of the long drive . Not just the hunter & show crowd but spectators or people who don’t comp hunt who just want to come out and see what its all about ( I know many & so do you ) and prob spend some money with the vendors there and or meet new people and buy a pup or something ???? Heck, may even encourage those that don’t compete to start for the first time OR start back if they have quit ?
It will definitely change the playing field !!!! which makes it even more exciting .
For example , have it in Texas one year or two , then Michigan , then Okla , then Iowa , Then New York , etc , etc , etc ,,,, Seriously,,,, Why Not ?? You don’t think a guy can score 4, 5 or 600+ in any other state ?
Also- If this hunt is put on to crown the next Nat GR NT CH then why have warm up hunts and a Grand Masters Hunt all in the same week ?? Why don’t you have the Grand Masters on a different date ? and allow it to be it's own " BIG EVENT " ? Why try to cram all these hunts into one week ? I know a lot of the guides are probably cutting dogs loose in the same spots all week long and then if you are the “unlucky” one come fri night you get to hunt those coons that have been hammered for the last several nights. Just because you have "land" to cut a cast of dogs into doesn't mean your a quality guide. This hunt has got WAAAAYYYY TOO BIG for the amount of quality guides. I Know UKC is a business , they are going to make money that’s part of it so why not take in as many dogs as you can ?? It’s obvious…. More money in their pocket . and hey I’m ok with that. They get thier fair share from me and thats ok - I love this sport and it costs to play. Dont take me out of context here, Im not down on UKC , I just see a few things could/need to be tweaked and I’m sure a lot of other people in other parts of the country would agree.
Don’t get me wrong I love OAKS ! It’s a great time and look fwd to it every year ! I'll be driving wherever ya'll have it but Why not a change of Scenery ?? I wanna hear what everyone thinks ???..... Also would like to hear from UKC …..?? Thanks !!!

I for one can't make the drive out there. Not that I can't physically. Just choose to use my vacation on Wiser things. If it were closer I'd be willing to go. This isn't the first time someone has mentioned this about oaks or the world hunt. I'd like to it travel around for the same reason as you. And I think you'd have a better idea why some will not agree with it moving around. Just wait for the replies. There will be all kinds of reasons why they shouldn't. But in all honesty can anyone give a real reason why it's a bad idea? I doubt you'd have any less attendance.

I'd be fine with armadillos. But still wouldn't be willing to trade for my vacation days. I know my dog don't mess with dillers. I bought her from a good buddy in Arkansas. She ain't too young but she can still compete.

location change

I used to think it was a great deal to have it move around, but NOT anymore. It's way TOO BIG for any other area to handle in my opinion. Great hunting, even if coons are pressured for that week. Lots of motels & great fairgrounds, even in I would prefer alot more shade trees in parking lot. It's been there long enough now that it makes it easy to find & plan your vacation around the same area every year. With the 4 lane highways, you can come at it from every direction easily. JMOP.

Man, after typing that, I almost sound like I'm on the Richmond Chamber of Commerce!!!

As far as changing the hunt setup, I would be totally against that. We can come to 1 location & hunt Grand Masters or slams earlier in week, then be there for GRNT hunt on Friday without making 2 long roadtrips & being gone from family for a different time frame. Maybe shouldn't mention this, but I will. If you like to hunt in other registry, you can just buzz down the road & take in some of their hunts too. Worked great for me- stayed in New Castle- 40 miles S to Greensburg & 30 miles E to Richmond, then could head west come Sunday back to Iowa. Really don't think it would work better for all concerned. Take care, Ron.

yadkintar- don't need to be hunting where they are or your rattle snakes for this old northern coonhunter!!!

I've never been to Denali or Kodiak. I guess if it was important enough I could find a way.

The thing that makes a great hunt is location. When it is doing well in an area leave it alone. The best way to kill one is to move it around.

I have never been to Autumn Oaks but I love looking at the legacy and history of it, I've wanted to go for a long time and the reason I've not gone isn't because of the distance, if it were in Mississippi, Iowa, Maine, or Maryland I'd want to hunt if I went and have a chance to do something special, I've never had a dog that I thought I could do that with until now so I've never gone but next year I will make it out there to hunt and hopefully have a fightin chance to make the Grand 16. And if I feel like I've got the dog power the year after next I'll go again, I know it'd be cool to check everything out I'm just not a big fan of going to a hunt just to spectate. But looking back at the history of the people and dogs who've accomplished big things out there I wouldn't want it to be anywhere else because if I we're to ever have a shot at taking a dog to the Grand 16 I'd want to do it under the same circumstances and in the same place those who came before me have done it so I wouldn't care if it ever changed, it'd just take away the tradition of the entire hunt to me. I feel like alternating places to hold Oaks would be like alternating the Daytona 500 or the Kentucky Derby.

I am with Rolin Blues on this one. I don't think people understand the amount of planning and help it takes to put on this kind of event. Most places in the country could not put on an event such as this one. It takes an abundance of coon hunters and others to guide that many dogs in one night. It also takes people who are willing help even if they don't have a dog in the hunt. Certainly not all the guides are going to be equal but that is going to be the case no matter where the event is held.

As far as the Grand Masters and the warm up hunts I really like all that being offered in the same week. I can take off work for 3 days and only have to make one trip. If the Masters was on another weekend I would still have to take off an extra day from work and would have to make 2 trips. I also like the atmosphere of having these hunts during the same week. I travel over 10 hours to AO but don't mind as long as I continue to enjoy the events that are taking place there.

Toad Hill I am not sure what other places in the country could realistically host this event?

Im new to ao. This was my second year. I like the fact its more of a tradition now. Its been there for so long. I meet up wit a guy that says hes been there every year theyv had it there. You get to know the area. The stores restaurants hotels. This year i had to hardly even look at the map cause i drove round so much last year. And i like all the action all week. Every day is a new topic of conversation at everyones setup on the grounds. Changin up would be a shame. And make it hard on the people that go every year to plan for.

If you look at the number of hunt entries and the number of show entries, then look at the crowds on the grounds all weekend, I sorta doubt UKC is looking for ways to get more people there. After you drive 150 miles to a satellite club to hunt and stand in lines half hour to talk to a Garmin rep, your only response to hearing someone say they are staying home because it is too far away is "thank God!"

A lot of states couldn't handle that many dogs. Take my state of Missouri. We have nice centrally located fair grounds and good coon population but I don't think we would have enough clubs step up and help. A hunt as big as AO takes a lot of time to coordinate and if you move it that's that much more to worry about.

If you would herd the mayor and the other board lady talking at Oaks this year you would of realized just how much Richmond wants UKC's business. It's not going anywhere anytime soon. My goodness it's miserable hot there most of the time it's not moving south Even if it did.

This was my first year to autumn oaks I liked where it was. Coming from south western pa I jump on 70 and it's a straight shot right to the fair grounds. Jmo I'd let it where it's at Indiana and Ohio have more coons than any other state with that many dogs being hunted at a time and people driving from 100's of miles away you better have a lot of coon in the woods or the entries would be next to nothing in a few years.
