dead loaner

dogs and hunters these days only want to hunt and be alone.the more i think about this the more i wonder if the sport will continue in a positive direction? why do we even draw out in a cast at the hunts?

lol

Absolutely!! everyone and thing wants to be alone!! its not as much about which dog can take a track away from a pack and blow away with a track and get it treed ahead of a pack!! more about which dog can blow deeper and get treed!! and not even run a track and get treed first!!most don't even know if there dogs can run a track!! its always lonely and deep!! but that's winning!! nothing wrong if that's what ya want!! Compete against others on a track in a bean field or cornfield/ drive that track away from others and have it treed before the others know what or where it went/ that's competing/ which ones are track driving/ that can run a track/get under rite tree and have the coon!!it just leaves the other dogs confused!! Don't see much that anymore!! jmt!!

OLD TIMES

Days of sitting under a tree and listening to a good pack or a couple of dogs running at night are getting few and far between. I like going out at night and sitting and just listening to a couple or more dogs running.

Non Coonhunters

Let me add taking new people out and having them whisper questions and I look at them and ask why they are whispering and laugh when they say they thought they had to be quit while hunting. Fun part about coonhunting you don't have to be quit and can sit and joke around and tell stories while hunting.

Good post but idk where this build a fire stuff always comes from. Since I started 30 years ago if a dog was so slow you had to build a fire I'd throw the dog on it . The absolute best dogs I've seen would tree with others or tree alone they were looking for coons. Most but not all loners were inferior track dogs that a good track dog would smoke . keep breeding them that way and see what we have in another 20 years .

Jeff the sit around the campfire was the guys/girls down southern way would turn a pack of fox hounds out and run fox all night long and just listen to the hounds run. Not so much with coon hounds took place back when we used lanterns for light

"Deep and lonely" for the most part is a catch phrase people use because they heard somebody else use it lol.

The ones that actually are, for the most part, are what used to be described as independent to a fault or just plain and simple too nasty to tree with other dogs. If I see one swim a lake to get clear of other dogs I'm taking it out of the gene pool. Hardly even any need to lay in wait to thrash one for covering anymore, just hunt it with his deep and lonely daddy and he'll thrash him for ya.

Dont have to worry about your dog getting chewed on as much if its alone.

that's true, but also don't have to worry about getting caught as much if your dog is the "chewer"

dead loner

I like a dog to work it's own track that it starts & split trees by itself. BUT a dead loaner is the biggest pain in butt there is.Last week on 2 casts we had there was 1. 1st night, loner goes N after we send dogs S. .5 mile gets treed. Our dogs are.9 mile S treed, 1 1/2 hr. hunt used up to score 2 circle trees. Sat. night send dogs N, make a tree & re-cut. Loner is .4 mile S of us treed & our dogs are treed .5 mile N of us when we get back to hear them. Cost me cast win by not being able to stay within hearing of our dogs.

Also, if you want to pleasure hunt with people, it is almost necessary to carry 2 rifles because dogs are never together anyway . JMO. Take care, Ron.

I need a close and lonely dog with no quit in it. Something that will hang back from all the racing. Yet hunt through yonder if it has to. Chewback,Yadkin or anybody help me out? I think a dog like that could rack up the wins. It don't have to be alone all the time but if it's not racing I'd expect it to be alone a lot.

DEAD LONER

Most over used term in coonhound world. To hear you guys tell it there everywhere. A dead loner with coon treeing power to back it is a rare find.

Most of what everyone calls a dead loner is a dog that is blowing through the country running past coon and gets lucky and ends up getting treed 2 miles away, A good true loner dog is hard to come by although he does not have to be in the next county to be a loner he can be 300 yards and want back other dogs .

The dogs have changed over the years in just the 25 years ive been hunting. Ive got some loners but they don't shoot through the country to do it and don't mind another dog treeing 2nd but don't expect them to 'me too'. I had an older coonhunter go with me one cold night and asked me if I wanted to build a fire while the dogs went hunting. He didn't believe how much coonhounds have changed when I told him we wont have time to enjoy the fire.

If I want to run with a pack I would run deer/fox dogs. My coon dog hunts all week alone so I expect him to be alone on a fri or sat comp hunt. I don't want any yours but you get a piece of mine. Although $kc countdown u won't get much of mine
The people around my area that are complaining about these style dogs are doing it because they can't beat them. Different strokes for different folks .

I really don't have a choice for right now either,,I just love listening to acouple of hounds either working a track or parked below a coon,,I could listen to that all night.
Hopefully someday I can get back out there on my own every now and again,,but even if I do get back in tip top shape,,I will always go out with my youngest brother,,I cherish those memories.
I just got out of ICU today after being there for a full week,,almost bit the bullet for the fifth time in a year and a half,,I feel terrible my brother has too train my pup when he has his own to work on,,but that is what is making our memories.
As long as god gives me the strength and willpower to overcome this optical in my life,,I see many more cherished memories listening to acouple hounds doing what they were bred too do,,Happy Hunting Everyone...
