Hey Bruce,
Reading your comment about how she hunts. I've a very similar story, I hope you don't mind me sharing it. A few years back there was a friend of mine who always hunted walker dogs, and he had a young English male dog he just wanted to give away said he couldn't get him to do anything, and would never be with the dogs and couldn't ever show him a coon as he was always to himself but just never done anything. He invited me for a hunt and said he would give him to me if I wanted him. Well I was in the market for a Male, so what could it hurt. So me and a buddy of mine went over and I took only 1 dog (Jackie) and he had his older Walker male and this redtick male pup, around a yr old. Cut loose and shortly after dogs struck, never a peep out of the redtick male pup, but didn't see him anywhere. After a little while dogs were getting deeper, so we tightened up in them, Mr. Haney that owned the pup was ahead of us walking and he stopped up ahead to listen so I stopped and cut the light about 20 yds behind. As we were listening I could hear something off to the side scratching on bark of a tree, I turned and shined my light in that direction, and here is this pup stretched up on a tree... I'm thinking not now !!!!! Mr Haney never had a clue, shortly he took off walking again so I followed at a short distance. 100 or so yards later mr Haney stopped again, and it was a repeat I heard that pup out to the side stretching on a tree and whimpered a time or 2.... Again I'm thinking not now..... Well older dogs settled on a tree and we went in and gathered dogs. I told mr Haney I needed to go, and he said see what I mean, that pup is no where around. I just agreed and said I'd still like to try him. So on the way back to the truck, I seen the pup s little ways out in the timber, so I went and got him on a leash before he flipped... Got to the trucks and said our good byes. Mr Haney said good luck but I think he is a dud. I just smiled and drove away. My Buddy looked at me and said you know that pup is fixing to flip don't you, I just smiled and said yep, I sure do. 2 wks to that date I got him, this pup flipped and split trees his very 1st tree and had the coon, he never looked back from that night. It was like he had figured it out all on his own. I mean he was solid, and would have a coon split every night. 4 wks into owning him I carried him to a 10 dollar pkc hunt, he treed the only coon looked at split in the cast, and won 27 bucks. 2 wks after that I took him to a Pro hunt where they were having a pup cast, again he treed the only coon we seen, split and a couple den trees, all split treed..... I won 110.00 on him that night. About 2 wks later Mr Haney called to see how if the pup was treeing with the dogs yet, I said no he wasn't. Mr Haney replied and said well you might as well put him down. I said mr Haney you asked if he was treeing with dogs, I didn't say he wouldn't tree..... I told him he would be by himself every drop and have a coon. Mr Haney just went to laughing as he thought I was pulling his leg, came back and said well I guess you will have his 100 won in no time then.... I said as a matter fact it is already won !!!! You could have heard a pin drop..... He says l have to see it to believe it.... Well I obliged him, and I thought after the hunt he was going to cry.... He was truly upset he got rid of that pup. I told him then what if seen the night I picked him up, he said why didn't you tell me. I said mr Haney I told you when you 1st got the pup how they would act, and their bad independent. I told you on different occasions not to worry, it will come. This pup was out of my Dollar dog, and I'd started a few of them, it was just their style....... Mr Haney called this pup Luke, which I changed to "Sunkist"....... and I never regretted a min of it, sure had a lot of fun with him. I'd love to have this female, just not sure how I'd get her right now.
Didn't mean to be so long winded but I'd to share.....
