Neighbor shoots my dog with a pellet rifle

So this evening my female black and tan, that I payed very good money for out of uglystick, wanted out of the pen. She was barking and getting excited. So I said what the heck I'll let her run around in the grass for a little while. I was building a new door for the dog pen at the same time. She ran off into the neighbors yard and bayed a small cat. I heard her bark about 3 times. I didn't think much about it as I was measuring and cutting my boards. Then I hear her hear bark and kinda squeal. I knew what happen cause I happened to hear the snap of the pellet rifle. I stopped and watched, sure enough she came running with her tail tucked. I live in the country and my neighbor is not really that close to my house like some may think. However It was close enough to hear the pellet rifle. Anyway I run that way and slip up to his yard.He sees me and starts running away down the side of the wooded fence row beside his house. I holler at him "Hey I see you stop" He stopped and starts walking to me with his hand out like he wanted to shake my hand. I said why did you shoot my dog and said it had his cat bayed. He tells me he only pumped the rifle up one time. Then I asked where the cat was. When I seen it I said that's not your cat. I told him that was my cats kitten she had by accident, and he said that the cat stayed around his house. I said well really its not your cat. I told him I was gonna haul all the cats around here off if they cause this
kinda problem. Then he said go ahead we don't need them around here. When he said that I told him well why in hell was you so hell bent on shooting my dog if you felt that way. I let him know I was not happy. I go back home and inspect where he shot her it was right below the hip bone real low in the butt. She was bleeding pretty good and the pellet did go in her I think. I was PISSED so I walk back over and there. And there was two really rough looking girls on the porch. I said where is the dude that shot my dog. They get him. I told him what kinda dog he just shot and that I have lots of money tied up in my hounds. All my hounds are treated first class, and that my dogs aint just some mutt tied up in somebodys yard. I told him it's a big fine to shoot another mans hunting dog and that I might take legal action.Technically the dog was not in his yard anyway. It was just on the other side of his land line. I had him almost in tears. He is scared to death I'm gonna make him pay for it. Which I may depending on the vet bill.My dogs seems fine she ate and drank water pretty good. So I know the pellet did not hit anything vital. I'm going to keep a real close eye on the hole before I take her to the vet.She seems to be in no pain at all.So lets hear it what would yall do if this happened to you?

Not the same situation but when i was a kid the neighbour had an apple orchard and the deer were thick in it. He got some natives to hunt the deer year round often at night and they would get on our land and be driving around shooting deer out of the truck, sometimes shooting deer and not recovering them if they made it out of the field. Im talking a a couple hundred acres.

So after awhile my Dad has enough and goes over knocks on the door, the neighbour opens and Dad says "you've got them hunting again and they're on our land" and boom he pops him right in the face and walks away. Ever since the neighbour calls him and me "Sir" and checks with my dad before he does anything even related to my dads land. lol

edit-that was also the end of anybdoy hunting on the neighbours

You should file a complete with you LE. Then there will be a record of the incident. I think you should also file a complaint against him. If nothing else, it will make he know that folks take their dog seriously and that he can get into serious trouble. He knows he didn't have to shoot that dog. He did it just for fun. He needs a hickory switch across the back of his legs to make his dance right. He shot your valuable dog but it's just as bad if he shot a stray mute. No dog deserves that unless it's causing a problem and walking across property isn't causing a problem. On the other hand, and I like this better, this may be a perfect opportunity to share the gospel of grace with him. Maybe you can help change him for life and eternity.
