How many of ya had to raise a litter

by bottle feeding? How did you deal with lack of sleep? It is harder than hunting every night!

I had to do it back in the mid 90's,,you are right,,it is hard,,especially when you have to do 13 pups,,but everyone of them survived,,thank god I had help from my wife back then.

I have had to do it several times, I use and used Dumor Goat powered milk from TSC if you have more than 6 pups, best to go ahead and get the big bag 20 plus pounds. I fed every 4 hrs. Mixed 1 cup of powder to 24 oz of water. I got bottles with the 8 oz marks so I would know how much each was taking in. Modified several nipples until I got one that worked good, slow but steady drip. As they got older I increased intake, usually at 2 weeks old they will take up to 3-4 oz. Watch that you keep the nipple full of milk and they dont suck alot of air. Get you a wrist band, cause there tiny little claws are sharp as razors and the older they get the more aggressive toward the bottle they get. You may need a fast drip nipple untill the pups get use to it, once they lock on and know what its about decrease the size of nipple or they blow milk out there noses. I always kept a box to put the ones I fed in until all was fed cause you will get confused. Also get you some baby wipes to wipe there butts and junk so they will do there busness. If you are feeding them because the mother doesn't have milk let her in after the feeding and she will do all that cleaning for you, keep them warm and good luck it is a job for sure. By the time they are 3 weeks old I always got Pro Plan can puppy food and mixed it with the milk. I have tried all kinds of canned food to speed the process up, but have found Purina Pro Puppy can food to mix easier into a slush with out clumps.

GOOD LUCK, IT'S A JOB !!

Less sleep than when I had my own babies ! Getting up every 2hrs to feed a litter is exhausting .
Goat milk fresh or replacer served warm (goat milk stores well in the freezer)
Regular baby bottles with a good soft nipple
Baby wipes for stimulating them to go and a trash can or over the toilet
Kiddie pool for when they are small and a good warm place , heating pad for newborns and a radiator style heater
Mash from a good puppy food w/ the goats milk mixed thin at first at about 3 wks . But I always continue giving the bottles until 5 wks , just a few times a day not every 2 hrs then lol .

I raise one on a bottle from 3 days old can't imagine a litter. Female had 3 but only 1 made it and she wasn't lactating so I named him slim Pickens and bottle raised him. By 7 weeks the work was done I was sending him on his way and he started taking seizures and I had to put him down

Good luck with that.

Make it easy on yourself and build a bottle rack that holds multiply bottles. Just like bottle feeding dairy calves.

The pups are 18 days old. I have been feeding them since they were 4 days old. If it wasn't for the watch on my wrist, I wouldn't have a clue what day it was. My hands are a raw mess from washing the same bottle over and over not to mention their claws (yes their toe nails can not be called nails). I am going to wear my leather gloves for the next feeding.

I swear it has been a week since I had a complete thought. This coming weekend, I look forward to starting the weaning process. I did have my middle son do feeding chores during 2 days he wasn't working so I could go to work.

Opps, lost track of time, it is feeding time again.

the triangle shaped makup sponges work better for the first 2 wks than bottles do...at least when I had one. use a human nail trimmer to trim their nails every few days as well. they will get used to it as they get older.

Many years since I raised some completely on the bottle. I start pan feeding pups at 2 weeks old. I mix puppy chow with milk and let it become mush, then feed it in a shallow pan.

All I can say is wow

This surely has not gotten easier. The bottle feeding isn't bad. The worst is no sleep longer than 1 1/2 hours. It seems that I don't do well when I get no REM sleep for over 2 weeks. My family said I tend to get grumpy ... personally I don't see it.

The pee and poop in the whelping box is unbelievable! How can things that small pee and poop so much?

If my work didn't let me work at home, I am sure i would have been fired by now. My wife is saying she doesn't think I can ever have another litter again after this.

The only saving grace right now is the fact that there is nothing cuter than hound puppies. One little female simply melts your heart with a mere look.

By the way, I am sure this isn't an indication, but two pups actually tree the nursing bottle when I set it down on the top edge of the whelping box. They completely stretch straight up with a piercing sharp puppy bark. I would be lying if I said it didn't make me smile.

Plan is to start weaning them tomorrow.

PS My hats off to those who have done this!
