Apparently Cali got outa pocket last night. This is TMack's post from facebook -- "Lost PLEASE if anyone sees her left me know ASAP! I turned her loose in a cast last night around Metropolis, Illinois & have yet seen her... This dog means the world to me, her collar quit working, I've been up all night looking for her & plan to keep looking until I find her, thanks for any help!"

Thanks everyone. I know that Tony is more sleep deprived than I am and I only got an hour of sleep last night. Her T5 collar stopped working last night after the hunt was over and we missed deadline. She was MIA for about 12 hours. It was really windy so it was impossible to hear her in the hills. She was found today about 3 miles from where they turned her loose and she was as excited to see Tony as he was to see her. I think they both got a couple Big Macs at BK and are headed to the motel. It got me thinking about a backup GPS attachment to these Garmins.

Is anyone using a smaller GPS tracking chip that fits on these Garmin collars for backups? I found a couple of small devices that mount on the Garmin collar or another collar that will give you service anywhere in the US on iPhone and Android devices. They claim within 10 yards accuracy and cost about $135 which includes a free year of service to cell towers and GPS satellites. I know let me be the tester right? lol

It's not GPS but West Coast Telemitry make a piggy back collar that goes on a garmin collar. It's an old style beep beep collar that uses an ATS or Wildlife box. I think they're around 90 dollars.

Don't know anybody involved, but really glad he got his dog back, there's not a much more sick feeling where dogs are concerned.

Anyone know what happened to the collar, was the battery weak and went dead, or did it just quit working?

Allen, I think really for a backup a combo telemetry collar like I sent you would be best. Two reasons, battery and dependability, neither of which any GPS could provide when one gets out of pocket super deep or in a hole, etc. Running such a collar is very common here on big game hounds who cover so much ground and may run a track all day...or end up in a holler so deep you have to pack in your own sunlight at high noon.

I don't think Tony would even know how to run one of those telemetry collars Adam. He would be like me with an Alpha in my hands. haha
Unless they've changed, those telemetry systems don't give much more range in those hills than a Garmin. I want something that will reach out there at least 3miles, or if someone throws them in a truck it sounds an alarm if they break the 5 mile mark and I can track them to wherever they go. I think the one you showed would be great in flat country though. These GPS tracker units have unlimited range as long as they have cell service. Now considering where they were last night I'm not sure, but Tony seemed to have good service on his phone in that forest land.

In hills, and by hills I mean walls, I always got a beep signal, the issue would be how it can "bounce" but I could always narrow it down. I still hated them though. One thing for sure about a beep system, if they ain't treed and they ain't barking but they are moving...then good luck, it's like a good snipe hunt. Missed more the a handful work days back then looking for a dog.

Also, in those steep places cell signal is a joke, especially anything stronger than 1x.

I've seen extended life batteries for garmin...I think, I'm still using dc40s! Ha. Those truck antennas are awesome too, well worth the cost.

Get you a Marshall system for a backup and will get all the range you will probaly ever need..May not find it on amazon or eBay though.Glad he found her.

Glad u got her back. We lost a dog yrs ago, found her 16 days later. She was tattooed and had a shocking collar (not ours) on her. We had the guy arrested but he only got a small fine. PSP couldn't arrest him for stealing her only for not returning her. It was 16 days of hell for us.
