Bought a registered omcba male dog 2 year old . The dog came from orangeburg few weeks ago in a trade. I bought him last week and was told he has been in a pen all his life. I have a descent squirrel dog that he will follow until she starts barking on trail and trees ("yes she barks on trail for squirrel") and he turns around and seems like it scares him. After that hes done and if I shoot he's gone. Always able to catch him. He is crazy excited to see me walk up to the pen but when hes out he just walks around scared . but no excitement on a dead squirrel. Feel like I need to make him a pet and proceed from there. Any ideas guys ?
Hes the grandson of smith mtn rocky and northup's golden terra only dogs on his papers I could google lol

It sounds like you have a hard road ahead of you, it is hard to de-shy a dog and about the only thing you can do is get him use to noise and use to you and you may be able to bring him around some, bang his food bowl before you feed him and when in the woods use a 22 and leash him before you shoot and pet him afterwards and also you may want to kennel him with your other dog and get him use to her and he may stay with her even when she trees, you will just have to put some time in with him and you never no he may come around for you, good luck.

Like moleman stated it's a hard road ahead. Completely up to you whether you want to put the time in or not. I've seen a couple of really nice dogs that previously needed a lot of work to get past the major insecurities that were keeping them from doing anything. Lot of work. In their cases it turned out to be well worth it.

You almost have to do it for the pure enjoyment and challenge of helping a dog, and the learning that comes along with it. Success wont necessarily be determined by whether the dog has any abilities underneath all that skittishness or not.

Been taking him to the woods as much has possible. He seems interested in something, nose to the ground not sure if hes hunting or just smelling. Gonna try to show him a live squirrel in a tube and maybe something will click.

that's a well bred dog you have, that's what happens when someone puts a young dog or pup in a kennel then basically ignores it.the golden terra has produced a lot of good hunting dogs when they were given a chance. d. petty can probably help you with your dog as well as anyone.it may take a while but hope you can get the dog straightened out & maybe get it doing what was bred to do. good luck.
